Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei criticized Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio Party, for planning nationwide demonstrations on Friday, July 7. Senator Cherargei, who belongs to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), warned that anyone involved in the protests would be arrested and taken to court if there was any violence. He also mocked Raila, saying that he lacked new strategies in such situations and had become predictable over the years.
” If any property is damaged or lives are lost during the protests on Saba Saba, Raila Odinga, and other Azimio leaders should be held responsible. They should be taken to court, fined, and arrested. Since 1997, Raila has had no new tactics. Whenever he loses an election, he challenges the government and calls for demonstrations. But this time, he won’ t get away with it. We need to restore order in the country, ” he emphasized.
Cherargei appealed to the youth, advising them not to be manipulated by the opposition during the protests, which supposedly aimed to pressure the current government to lower the prices of basic goods.
” If they are protesting about the economy, what alternative solution have they offered? This is not unique to Kenya. If you travel around the world, you will hear people complaining about the economy, ” he said.
At the same time, the senator assured the public that President William Ruto’ s administration would not be swayed by Raila’ s demands. ” I want to assure the public that the government will protect their property and lives, ” Cherargei added.
On Tuesday, Raila announced the resumption of demonstrations and other measures that Kenyans could take to protest against the Ruto government, specifically focusing on the taxes imposed by the government.
During an event at Kamukunji Grounds, Raila called for civil disobedience against the Finance Act of 2023, which includes a variety of taxes, with a large portion of the funds allocated for development projects nationwide.
” On Saba Saba day, Friday, June 7, 2023, we, the people, will come together to make a major declaration. At the event, we will announce several strategies that will cripple Ruto’ s regime, ” Raila declared.
Some of the measures Raila suggested included carpooling, walking to work, overloading vehicles, avoiding the use of electronic tax registers, and blocking Ruto’ s motorcade, among other things.
