On Friday, Kenyans on Twitter were entertained as Uasin Gishu County’s scholarship scandal took an unexpected turn when the emerging media figure, Mercy Tarus, engaged in a discourse with Narok Senator Ledama Olekina. The incident occurred after Ledama offered her a job.
Tarus, who has gained prominence for her direct approach, declined Ledama’s job offer and instead proposed that the senator introduce a bill in the Senate to investigate the scholarship debacle. Earlier, Senator Ledama had expressed his interest in working with Tarus, inviting her to a conversation: “Mercy Tarus, I would like you to work for me… speak your heart …the future belongs to candid youth! Let’s talk!” Social media users flooded Ledama’s timeline, with some praising the gesture while others criticized it. Eventually, Tarus responded to the senator’s proposition.
Tarus politely declined the job offer, urging Ledama to take action through legislation to address the Uasin Gishu County Government’s role in the scholarship issue and ensure affected individuals are reimbursed. “Mr Ledama, before we can further this conversation, talk to your fellow Senators to hold the Uasin Gishu County Government accountable and compel them to refund rightfully earned money to Kenyan citizens. Maybe then, we can talk. Otherwise, I have nothing more to say,” she conveyed.
Tarus emphasized her current priority: securing refunds for herself and other victims. She stated, “Maybe then, we can work on the next project because my work will be done here. Otherwise, I cannot commit myself to other duties.”
As is customary for Kenyans on Twitter (KoT), they engaged in both support and trolling. Some urged her to take the job, while others commended her for her steadfast stance. “Accept the job; the other matter is already underway. Ledama didn’t steal from you. You’ll miss out on everything,” advised Mr President Kandie.
“Mercy, don’t fall for this handout. Would he have offered you the job if you hadn’t highlighted the problem? What about other Mercys out there unknown to anyone? I remind @ledamalekina that your role is to influence legislation that will improve the lives of all Kenyans without having to beg, bribe, or know anybody,” commented Justina Wamae.
Ammo Elija expressed, “Is there a problem if Ledama offers Mercy a job? No. Let Mercy work and earn something to support her family. Ledama is recognizing Mercy for her bravery…” Rashousmane stated, “This is rudeness. A golden opportunity lost; that’s how you missed it.”
“Maybe he’s been sent by a fellow senator to bribe you with a job that pays 50K, while that kind of money is a weekly stipend in your dream country. If the good Senator meant well, he should offer to pay for your tuition fees abroad,” Isaac Kwemoi wrote.Manyasi asked, “You’re refusing a job due to political affiliation?
