President William Ruto has warned the junta in Niger that if it continues to arrest President Mohamed Bazoum and seize power, the nation could be expelled from the African Union.
During his two-day State visit to Mozambique, Ruto made a statement calling the Niger coup undemocratic and in violation of the laws governing the African Union.
“As the Africa Union, we oppose the overthrow of any government in an undemocratic manner. The issues we face as a continent cannot be solved by coups. We are adopting a very tough stance and suggest that any undemocratic overthrow of any administration results in swift expulsion from the African Union, according to Ruto.
The Kenyan Head of State stated that the AU will back whatever choice made by ECOWAS to guarantee that President Bazuom is reinstated.
“According to our stance, President Bazoum ought to be reinstated as Niger’s democratically elected leader. We must halt the spread of authoritarian regimes across our continent.” Ruto saidd
His remarks came weeks after a military coup in Niger, where the democratically elected president is being held hostage by a junta commanded by army general Abdourahmane Tchiani.
