One person was on Sunday, July 14 shot at Kware in Mukuru kwa Njenga as two more bodies were recovered from the dumpsite, bringing the total, as per our independent tally so far, to 17.
According to Mukuru Community Justice Centre, a non-governmental organisation that deals with social justice movements whose aim is to organize masses to monitor, document, and refer human rights violations to relevant institutions, the individual identified as Abel Muli, was shot on the backside by a live bullet.

“As the recovery of bodies continues at Kware in Mukuru kwa Njenga, tensions are rising. In a confrontation with police earlier today, Abed was shot in the backside with a live bullet. Police should do all they can to avoid further killings,” stated Sema Ukweli, a justice and human rights media organization that seeks to tell human interest stories, on X.
Another person, Cynthia Khisa, was reportedly hit by a teargas canister on her right rib.
The residents of the area had lamented that police officers were delaying in retrieving bodies at the site forcing them to take matters into their own hands.
Additionally, the residents stated that they resorted to borrowing ropes from neighbours to help them access the dumpsite and retrieve bodies.
At the same time, Azimio leader Raila Odinga and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna went to the Mukuru kwa Njenga dump site in Kware as residents protested against the killings being reported in the country. Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah was also pictured in the area, interacting with the youth.
Earlier, Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss, Mohamed Amin, revealed that his agency probing the mystery of the Kware dumpsite bodies recovery had explored three possible angles; either instances of cults, serial killers or rogue medical practitioners.
The preliminary investigations conducted by homicide detectives from the DCI hinted at serial criminal activities that are not linked to the recent abductions coming at the peak of anti-government protests.
He also noted a concern with how the bodies were packaged and dumped, including the choice of where to dispose of the bodies. This is as the detectives recovered more than 15 bodies with various levels of decomposition.
“The modus operandi was almost the same. If you look at the age, it was between 18-30. These are all female. If you look at how the bodies have been disguised and packaged – all the same,” Amin stated, noting that bodies were dumped at a similar spot in the dumpsite.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja in a statement revealed that the Nairobi Funeral Home (formerly City Mortuary) received eight bodies and 12 body parts even as retrieval efforts continue at the dump site.
“We recognise and applaud the young people of Kware who went out of their way and took the lead in the retrieval efforts. Their industry and bravery will not go unrewarded,” he remarked.
To ensure fair and unbiased investigations, Acting Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja announced the transfer of all police officers based at Kware Police Station.
