Ministry of Education urges parents to caution children on dangers of drug abuse

The Ministry of Education has advised parents and guardians to guide their children on how to navigate through the temptations that may arise during this festive period.

In a statement by Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, parents have been urged to caution their children against the dangers of drug abuse which has become rampant in the country.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Education, I wish all learners, parents and guardians a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year 2023. To protect our learners, I wish to urge parents and guardians to exercise their utmost parental responsibility to appropriately guide their children on ways to effectively navigate the negative temptations that come with the festive season. Particularly, parents must caution their children against the dangers of drug and substance abuse that are most prevalent in some parts of the country,” the statement by the CS revealed.

Machogu’s statement also urged parents to start preparing their children early to make them ready for the 2024 school calendar scheduled to start on January 8 for the entire groups with form ones set to start on January 15.

“More importantly, parents and guardians should embark on the task of preparing learners to ensure they are ready for the 2024 School Calendar, 2024. It is instructive that Early Childhood Development, Primary and Secondary schools will open for commencement of the First Term studies on January 8th, 2024, except for Form One students who will report to their new institutions on January 15th, 2024,” the CS shared.

The CS has advised field officers in the Ministry to report to their stations every working day to help parents who will have queries regarding the 2024 calendar.

“All field officers of the Ministry of Education have been advised to report to their duty stations on all working days to assist parents with necessary preparations regarding the 2024 School Calendar,” he added.

“I wish to thank all stakeholders for their overwhelming support to the education sector in 2023, which enabled us to stay on a firm trajectory during our robust rollout of various reforms in line with the recommendations of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms Report.

“The Ministry of Education wishes to express the Government’s unwavering commitment to promoting access to education at all levels, and providing financial support to all deserving learners at all levels in the spirit of leaving no one behind,” he concluded.
