Prominent Kenyan-Canadian scholar, barrister, solicitor, and legal analyst, Miguna Miguna, has given his prediction on the ramifications any other Kenyan would have faced, had they addressed the United States Ambassador Meg Whitman in the same manner as Raila Odinga did.

In a notable event during the 8th Devolution Conference held in Eldoret, Raila Odinga, a veteran Kenyan politician, did not mince his words. Odinga addressed Ambassador Whitman directly, advising her to steer clear of Kenyan internal affairs. He also issued a veiled threat, suggesting that he would use his influence to advocate for her recall to the United States should she not heed his words.

Miguna, commenting on the incident on his platform ‘X’, argued that there’s a double standard in the way the media portrays similar actions by different individuals. He opined that if any other Kenyan figure had made such a bold and direct statement as Odinga did, the media would have reacted very differently. Such a person, he believes, would have been immediately targeted, ridiculed, and continuously lampooned by the media. The press would ensure that the individual faces the repercussions of uttering such impactful and politically sensitive words.

Yet, Miguna notes, Odinga seems to be treated differently. The media, according to him, is attempting to sanitize Odinga’s remarks. There seems to be an evident effort to spin Odinga’s words and sentiments against the US Ambassador in a light that paints him as correct or justifiable. This, Miguna suggests, exposes a potential bias or selective coverage by the media.

It’s an interesting observation that delves deeper into the relationship between political figures, the media, and international diplomacy. It also raises questions on how media bias can shape public perception and potentially influence outcomes in the political arena.
