Kalala in a statement termed the decision to leave the urban radio station after nearly three years as not an easy one
Media personality Prudence Tonui, popularly known as King Kalala, announced her exit from NRG Radio station on Tuesday, October 8, amidst a mass exodus sweeping the station.
Kalala in a statement termed the decision to leave the urban radio station after nearly three years as not an easy one, though decided that it was time to expand her wings.
“After much thought, I have decided to part ways with NRG Radio. This decision wasn’t easy, but I believe it’s time for me to explore new directions and focus on exciting new ventures ahead,” she stated in part.
“To all my fans; I want to thank each and every one of you for your unwavering support and enthusiasm throughout this journey. Your belief in me and what I do has meant the world.”

She also appreciated her colleagues at NRG for being integral in her radio journey which she added opened her up to opportunities for growth and collaboration.
“While this chapter closes, I’m excited about the future and can’t wait to share the next steps with you. Stay tuned there’s so much more to come! Regards, King of the Klan, Kalala,” she added, keeping her next move a secret from her fans.
Until her departure, King Kalala at NRG hosted the NRG Transit Queens show alongside Kamene Goro and Kapinto. She also hosted one of the best breakfast shows in Kenya called the B Club show where she co-hosted alongside three content creators dubbed ‘3 Men Army’.
Prior to her NRG stint, King Kalala shot to prominence in the Kenyan social media scene thanks to her unique voice and unfiltered nature. Her knack for delivering unpopular opinions on modern social issues including love and relationships helped her become relatable, particularly among younger audiences, perhaps a matter that led to her NRG stint.
The 26-year-old doubles as a social media influencer and YouTuber, with over 747,000 followers on Instagram, which is her most lucrative online platform. Besides radio, King Kalala has also taken her voice talents to podcasts, where she consistently makes appearances in some of the most popular podcasts in Kenya.
Kalala’s exit hands a big blow to NRG Radio, as she was arguably one of the most prized presenters at the station thanks to her huge online following. In particular, her show, NRG Transit, had some of the highest ratings.
Her announcement came just two days after her counterpart Natalie Githinji also announced her exit. In her statement, Githinji noted that her reason for leaving the station was to pursue other opportunities and seek fresh challenges.
Githinji is another presenter who will be a huge miss at the station since she also commanded a huge following and was one of the pioneer presenters when NRG was still establishing itself in the Kenyan media space.
“My departure marks the close of a significant chapter for me and the company, but I am excited about the paths that lie ahead,” Githinji remarked while she exited the station.
In less than one year, the radio station has experienced a mass exodus of some of its biggest names, who were synonymous with the brand. Three months before King Kalala and Natalie Githinji’s exits, Shaquille O’Neill Oduk, better known as ShaqtheYungin, left the station after six years.
Shaq’s departure came roughly two months after NRG’s two major presenters Mwalimu Rachel and DJ Xclusive departed the Westlands-based station and were poached by Radio Africa Group whose offices are down the Waiyaki Way road.
