A brewing storm has engulfed Kericho County Assembly as a section of members pledge to present a motion of impeachment against Governor Erick Mutai. This move comes in the wake of investigations into the alleged mishandling of Ksh 14.5 million, which was raised to aid victims of the tragic Londiani accident.
Led by Kericho County Assembly Majority Leader, Phillip Rono, the assembly members have accused the county government of diverting funds meant for the victims, painting a grim picture of financial mismanagement. “We’re going for a short recess but when we’re back, we’ll immediately form a select committee to look into this report and after that, we’ll bring a motion into the house – of impeachment,” remarked Rono.

The spotlight is now on Governor Mutai, as he faces calls to take decisive action against six county officials allegedly involved in the misappropriation. The MCAs emphasize that swift action must be taken to preserve the county’s reputation, which has been tarnished by the alleged misuse of funds intended for a noble cause.
The MCAs have also raised concerns over the absence of nominated members during crucial sessions in the Kericho county chambers. The call for the de-whipping of non-attending members highlights the assembly’s commitment to upholding accountability and serving the people of Kericho diligently.

A recent report from a special committee appointed by the County Assembly revealed stark disparities in payments made by the donation committee, sparking further outrage. Despite the committee’s recommendation to dismiss six county officials implicated in the irregularities, no action has been taken to date.
As Kericho County awaits the return of the Assembly from recess, all eyes are on the unfolding drama, signaling a critical moment for both governance and accountability in the region.
