Kenya Airways Adds Flights To 5 Routes, Reveals Next Step Before Suspending Somalia Flights

KQ revealed that the adjustments will ensure smoother and more efficient operations.

National carrier, Kenya Airways (KQ) is preparing for one of its busiest periods of the year, the peak season that is expected to reach a maximum during the festive season, and to do this, it has made adjustments to its flight network.

In a statement to newsrooms dated Friday, October 11, KQ revealed that the adjustments will ensure smoother and more efficient operations.

Five routes are set to have their frequencies increased to accommodate an influx of local and international travellers flying out of its main hub at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi, including those flying on the non-stop ultra-long-haul route to New York in the United States (US).

The adjustments also target routes to exotic tourist destinations. However, one destination, Mogadishu in Somalia, will be taken off KQ’s network, temporarily.

The following are the network adjustments:

Plaine Magnien, Mauritius

Effective October 27, 2024, there will be an additional flight from Mauritius to Nairobi. The flights will now operate on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

Moroni, Comoros Islands

Effective October 28, 2024, there will be one additional flight frequency from Nairobi to Comoros on Thursdays. The flights will now operate on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Zanzibar, Tanzania

Effective October 28, 2024 night flights from Zanzibar will increase to seven flights weekly.

New York, USA

From December 5, 2024, to January 4, 2025; there will be two additional flights from Nairobi to New York. The two additional flights will operate on Thursday and Saturday.

Kigali, Rwanda

Effective November 1, 2024, there will be one additional flight from Nairobi to Kigali on Fridays. This will increase the total number of flights to Kigali to 25 flights weekly.

Mogadishu, Somalia

Effective October 15, 2024, Kenya Airways will suspend all flights into and out of Mogadishu due to operational challenges. As previously reported by Viral Tea, this will allow the airline to refocus its efforts on optimizing its route network and improving overall operational efficiency.

With the decision anticipated to disrupt the schedules of those meant to fly to Somalia, KQ revealed that it would reach out to them to deliberate on alternative options.

“Passengers holding bookings on affected flights to or from Mogadishu issued on/ before 4th October 2024 and for travel or/ before 15th Oct 2024 will be contacted by Kenya Airways to arrange alternative travel options, including rebooking, refunds, or rerouting,” KQ assured Somalia-bound passengers.
