Ogla Karani, a governance analyst and former treasurer for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has praised the Kenya Kwanza Alliance’s suggestion to include the establishment of opposition positions in the topics up for discussion with the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance.
The introduction of the opposition leader’s position, the restructuring of the IEBC, the two-thirds rule for gender, the entrenchment of CDF, and the embedding of the Office of Prime Cabinet Secretary were all mentioned in the Kenya Kwanza statement that the majority leader in the National Assembly, Kimani Ichung’wah, shared.
Karani expressed the opinion that the opposition leader’s post will enable the opposition to hold the government in check in an organized manner and without having to organise anti-government protests that result in loss of life in her interview with NTV on Thursday night.
“We need to find a method to guarantee that Kenya has a respected opposition. I’m hoping the new 10-person team assigned to the negotiations won’t consent to a coalition similar to a handshake because that didn’t resolve our problems.
The better for us if the team can devise a framework that will create a reliable opposition that will watch over the government without feeling like they are intruding or needing to push their agenda.
They should be acknowledged for their involvement in our nation’s administration as well. With this, I’m confident we will have accomplished a lot that will benefit our nation moving ahead, and we won’t need to seek out.
Her remarks comes at a time when it emerged that the ceasefire for the talks between President William Ruto and the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was mediated by the former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
