As one of the most powerful women around ” Nyayo” at the time, Nabutola was an influential figure during the sunset years of the KANU reign.

Being Moi’s chief of protocol, she was always present in nearly all of the President’s trips within and outside the country.

Even after Moi’s exit from power following the historic 2002 general election, Nabutola was among the lucky few members of the old regime who were given a soft landing by the incoming President, Mwai Kibaki.

She was appointed by Kibaki as Tourism Permanent Secretary. But it is this appointment that ended up consuming her, thereby ending her stellar career in the public service.

In 2012, Nabutola was handed four years in jail. She was charged alongside Dr Achieng’ Ong’ong’a, the then Kenya Tourism Board Director General, for conspiracy to defraud the ministry of Kshs. 8.9 million.

From a high-flying technocrat, Nabutola’s career in the public service suddenly hit dead end. Jail was her new home.

After spending several weeks behind the bars, she was set free on cash bail pending the determination of her appeal. But life has never been the same again for her.

The once powerful Nabutola has now taken a very low profile. Her status in the society is not as it used to be during her glory days.

She had blossomed under Nyayo. But as they always say that power is transient, Nabutola’s fall from grace will be told for many years to come.
