Gov’t speaks after 11 Kenyatta University students die in tragic accident

The government has issued statement on the ghastly road accident involving a Kenyatta University (KU) bus and a trailer on Monday, March 18, 2024.

In a statement by government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, the President William Ruto-led government condoled with the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Mwaura also noted that the government through the Ministry of Education was working hand in hand with the university officials to ensure that they got all the necessary support needed during the hard times.

He added that psychosocial care and counselling services are available for those impacted by the tragedy.

“The government wishes to pass its most sincere condolences to the Kenyatta University fraternity following the bus accident that happened yesterday. The planned trip has been cancelled and the students who had arrived for the trip have been recalled to the institution in a show of solidarity with the affected comrades,” the government spokesperson said.

“We join in mourning the loss of our young and promising citizens and pray for the quickest recovery of the injured.”

Mwaura further urged road users to be vigilant to ensure safety and reduce the number of road accidents on Kenyan roads.

The latest comes shortly after the institution announced the suspension of classes for three days in honour of the departed students.

In a memo dated, Tuesday, March 19, 2024, the institution announced that the suspension starts tomorrow, Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

“It is with profound sorrow and sadness that I inform the university community of the tragic road accident involving our students from the Department of Health Management and Informatics in the School of Health Sciences yesterday in which we lost eleven students.

“Following this unprecedented tragedy, the University Management has decided to suspend all classes for three days beginning Wednesday 20th March 2024 to enable us to mourn our beloved students” the memo signed by the institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Waceke Wanjohi read in parts.

Kenyatta University accident

The accident that claimed eleven lives occurred past Maungu in Voi sub-county.

At the time of the incident, the students were headed to Mombasa for a trip.

So far 24 students are currently hospitalized, and eight students are in critical condition and have been airlifted to Nairobi through the support of AMREF Flying doctors for further treatment.

The bodies of the fatalities were also moved to Kenyatta University Funeral Home.
