The updated minimum wage schedule, as indicated in Legal Notices No. 163 and 164, covers a range of occupations, from general labourers, farm workers, and domestic workers to artisans, drivers, and more skilled professions.

The government is set to implement a 6 percent increase in the minimum wage across various sectors, bringing much-needed relief to thousands of Kenyan employees.

This announcement was made on Saturday, October 12 in a gazette notice signed by Labour Cabinet Secretary Dr Alfred Mutua, who argued that the wage increase is pivotal in improving the standards of employees. The increase is set to take effect on November 1, 2024.

“Today marks a significant step in our journey toward improving the livelihoods of Kenyan workers. Under the leadership of H.E. William Samoei Ruto, we have implemented a 6% increase in the minimum wage across various sectors, effective from November 1st, 2024,” announced Mutua in part.

“The signing of the gazette notice, which was witnessed by President Ruto at State House Nairobi, is a testament to our commitment to ensuring fair compensation for all Kenyan workers.”

Months of negotiations between the government, trade unions, and employers culminated in this decision. Initially, employers pushed for the establishment of the National Wages Council as a prerequisite for discussions on wage increments, to which Mutua replied by gazetting the council alongside several others, paving the way for structured negotiations.
