Give Us Development, Not Handouts— Siaya Elders Tell Orengo

Members of the West Alego Elders Forum have taken strong exception to the behaviour of Governor James Aggrey Orengo when he stopped over at Hawinga and Ratuoro on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Richard Ogangra Onjule (in blue suit) is the former Assistant Chief Kaugagi Hawinga Sub-Location.

The Governor who was ostensibly on a mission to inspect medical facilities in central and west Alego travelled over the Kombo-Gendro dyke which was re-constructed by intervention from Busia Governor Paul Otuoma with the help of the central government.

During his stopover at Hawinga Health Center to commission a building constructed by his, predecessor Governor Cornell Rasanga Amoth, Mr Orengo paid the usual lip service about his government being impartial and spreading development activities across the county.

The Governor had just inspected the Mbaga Water Treatment Plant, which is part of the ongoing rehabilitation of Abura Dam. There’s an ambitious project to install a giant solar system in the plant to help pump water and generate power with the capacity of serving approximately 50,000 residents.

Elsewhere Mr Orengo has been initiating one project after another (even if they are mainly for optics) but when he gets to West Alego he came empty-handed.

Led by the incoming Chairman of Kombo Beach Management Unit and former Assistant Chief Mr. Richard Ogangra Onjule the Elders promised to take up the matter with the Governor next week at his offices. Mr Ogangra said fish stocks were facing threats of depletion in Lake Kanyaboli for use of prohibited fishing gear while a fisheries official from the county government would always come drunk and accept bribes from the youth who are not aware of the long-term effects of their actions. “It’s like we are forgotten and the county government is deliberately working for our downfall”, said the former administrator.

“It’s dishonest of the Governor to give six thousand shillings to the women and youth in Hawinga while taking development elsewhere. We are also taxpayers,” said Mr Ogangra, adding “The Governor did the same in Ratuoro after following the dyke constructed in his county by Busia Governor Paul Otuoma.”

A member of the Elders Forum Mr Dickson Ogolla said: “It’s a shame that the people of West Alego should be short-changed because of a political vendetta between the Governor and his Deputy.”

Governor Orengo was careful to avoid a smear campaign against the immensely popular Dr. William Oduol Denge who hails from the locality of Hawinga.
