Gachagua reaches out to Mombasa mandazi seller, pledges support for sons’ education

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has promised to help a mandazi seller in Mombasa pay school fees for her kids.

Gachagua interacted with Asha Sidi Chengo in Mombasa on Wednesday, April 4, 2024, during his morning walk routines and after listening to her story, he offered to help.

“In my early morning walks along Mama Ngina Drive in Mombasa City, I usually notice this particular woman engrossed in baking mandazi and cheerfully serving it with tea to her customers, mostly hustlers walking to their places of work,” Gachagua said in a statement posted on his X handle.

“She is Asha Sidi Chengo, whose focus is to fend for the family and secure the future of her children. Today, I reached out to her to understand her drive. I hosted Asha at the Official Residence in Mombasa.”

The former Mathira Member of Parliament lauded Chengo for her determination and also vowed to help her sons pursue their educational dreams.

“The deep determination to live a dignified life and specifically offer her children a quality education stood out in our conversation. It was, therefore, deserving to support Asha in expanding the hustle, besides providing education for her two teenage sons,” he added.

“For Mama Asha Sidi Chengo, waking up early to bake and sell mandazi and hot tea along Mama Ngina Drive helps meet the needs of her family.”

Gachagua’s Mombasa interactions

Gachagua also interacted with other people who were doing various works within the coastal city.

“My healthy walk in Mombasa City this morning was a moment of interaction with hardworking Hustlers, who are immensely contributing to our economic growth,” he continued.

“It was equally encouraging to engage with groups of youthful men as they started off their day’s hustle at a construction site, defying the drizzle in building our nation. We are deliberate and resolute in our commitment to creating an enabling environment for all hustles to thrive.”

Gachagua’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) powered itself into government in the 2022 general elections with promises that primarily centred on youth employment.

Although critics have pointed out what they believe are Kenya Kwanza’s shortcomings for the period they have been running the country, Gachagua and his boss, President William Ruto are adamant they will deliver what they promised.
