Kenya Railways (KR) on Tuesday, July 23 unveiled new features of the new wagon for the Ksh1,500 economy class of Standard Guage Railway (SGR) trains.

In a series of posts on social media, KR revealed that the wagon will have a new seating arrangement whereby passengers will no longer sit facing each other, as has been the case with previous economy-class wagons.

“Instead, the 3 by 2 seating arrangement across the width of the coach will have passengers facing either the departing station or the destination station,” Kenya Railways explained.

The new seating arrangement aims to bring about more privacy among passengers and reduce unnecessary interactions over the course of inter-county trips.

The refreshed economy class also sees the introduction of features such as charging ports which each passenger will be able to access during the journey.

There will also be foldout trays that can be used when eating or when working on a laptop.

“Other features include charging ports for each passenger; a baby-changing area for freshening up babies during the journey; foldout tray tables and pocket seats for placing small items,” added KR.

These upgrades reflect KR’s dedication to improving the overall travel experience for all passengers.

To address the growing demand for SGR services, KRC has acquired a new power car capable of carrying 20 coaches. This addition will increase the capacity to carry more passengers between Nairobi and Mombasa, ensuring that the railway service can meet the needs of its users.

The unveiling of the coaches comes a day after KR introduced the SGR premium trains which will be charged at Ksh12,000 between Nairobi and Mombasa for a one-way ticket, while a return ticket will cost Ksh20,000.

Transport Principal Secretary Mohamed Daghar revealed that four soon-to-be-launched coaches had been received from China at the Mombasa port.

These executive coaches come with various amenities designed to enhance passenger comfort and convenience.

“With innovative improvements in freight operations, Kenya Railways is on course to transport 8.8 million passengers annually, comprising 6 million commuters and 2.8 million long-distance passengers,” Daghar stated.
