President Ruto has yet to name a replacement for Lang’at for consideration for appointment. Two high-profile nominees, Beatrice Askul and Dorcas Oduor underwent vetting via the National Assembly Committee on Appointments on Friday, August 9 for the positions of Cabinet Secretary for East African Community Affairs and Regional Development and Attorney General respectively.

“To whom it may concern, I hereby express my interest in the position of CS, Gender, Culture, The Arts & Heritage,” Majala wrote in part.

The former Swahili news anchor outlined that she is a lawyer, expressing confidence that her experience and merit are suitable for the CS position and that she has the understanding and the best interests of Kenya’s youth at heart.

“I have an LL.B.(Hons), MBA(StMg) and Candidate LL.M.,(Int’l Law). I have no Godfather nor handout but CV, Experience and Merit. I’m a cousin to Gen Z. Sincerely,” she added.

Majala was born in Mombasa on July 12, 1990. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Laws from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in 2014. She proceeded to attend the Advocates Training Program (ATP) at the Kenya School of Law in 2015.

The 34-year-old joined the media space in 2015 as a trainee reporter at Ebru TV while still in law school.

There, she anchored the Swahili 7 pm news and also produced as well as hosted a show on current affairs called Tujadiliane

She stayed at Ebru TV till 2017. In July 2018 Majala joined the Nation Media Group (NMG) where she was a news anchor at NTV, show host and reporter.

Majala left NMG in December 2019 and backed away from the limelight in Kenya to focus on her career in law and other personal projects.

In 2020 she obtained a certificate in Professional Mediation from the Mediation Training Institute of East Africa. Currently, she runs a Mediation Practice named Resolution Chambers, LLC, based in Nairobi which specializes in commercial and civil Mediation.

She has proved to be passionate about girl issues and the welfare of learners. Through her foundation started in 2016, Doreen Majala Foundation (DMF), she aims to increase educational opportunities by giving basic schooling necessities and resources in primary schools across Kenya.

Majala has been vocal about fighting teen pregnancies and drug abuse among other social issues.

While it is not yet clear whether the media practitioner was serious about expressing her interest in the CS job, many believe her experience would satisfy the portfolio to run the Gender docket.

In comparison, Lang’at’s nomination was rejected as she had failed to demonstrate adequate knowledge of topical, administrative and technical issues touching on the portfolio to which she had been nominated.
