Does This Mean We Are Suspending The Constitution? ODM Senator Raises Concern After Ruto’s Bold Move

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has posed a thought-provoking question in response to President William Ruto’s announcement that the planned protests by Azimio la Umoja will not be allowed to proceed.

The senator’s query, “Does this mean we are suspending the Constitution?” raises concerns about the implications of curtailing the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, which is clearly stated in the 2010 Constitution.

It should be noted that Azimio has been holding protests while using Article 37 of the Constitution of Kenya to defend their actions. The article allows Kenyans to hold peaceful protests.

President Ruto, during a visit to Naivasha, made it clear that his government will take on Raila Odinga and ensure that the scheduled three-day protests next week do not occur.

This bold move by the president has sparked a heated debate about the balance between maintaining public order and respecting constitutional rights.

Senator Ledama Olekina’s question serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding the principles enshrined in the Constitution.

He believes that Ruto’s order can only happen when the constitution is suspended.e180d22d0c4946c8937eee30ff66949c?quality=uhq&resize=720

The right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are fundamental pillars of a democratic society.

Any attempts to restrict these rights should be approached with caution and in line with the principles of constitutional governance.

While the government has a duty to maintain law and order, it must do so within the confines of the Constitution and the rule of law.

Any measures taken to prevent protests should be based on legitimate grounds and subject to judicial review.

The concerns raised by Senator Ledama Olekina reflect a broader sentiment among members of the opposition and civil society who are wary of any encroachment on constitutional rights.

President Ruto wants those interested in holding protests to do so from their own homes.
