DCI Clarifies Reported Abduction Of Former MP Alfred Keter

DCI added that Keter was booked at Kamukunji Police Station and later released pending Forensic Analysis of exhibits.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed that former Nandi Hills Member of Parliament (MP) Alfred Keter was arrested by police officers from the National Police Service (NPS), contrary to reports that he was abducted.

In a statement on X, the DCI revealed that the legislator was arrested for conspiracy to traffic firearms and incitement to violence.

“Contrary to the misinformation circulating on social media on the alleged abduction of Hon Alfred Keter by unknown men, this is to confirm that Hon Keter was arrested earlier today by NPS Officers for Conspiracy to Traffic Firearms and Incitement to Violence,” stated DCI in part.

DCI added that Keter was booked at Kamukunji Police Station and later released pending Forensic Analysis of exhibits.

“Thereafter the file will be forwarded to the ODPP for direction. Police are urging members of the public to refrain from acts of violence, hate speech and malice for sustained peace and security in our beloved country,” the statement added.

The statement comes after a video went viral showing Keter being forced out of his black Landcruiser V8 by police officers just as he was leaving the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Kileleshwa, Nairobi.

At least four police officers were seen bundling him into a white pickup truck with sirens, while curious onlookers watched and recorded the event.

Keter, along with his wife and children, were heard screaming as he was taken away to an undisclosed location, leaving behind the legislator’s family in his vehicle.

Earlier on Sunday, media reports had also alleged that Keter had been taken in circles in Nairobi before being booked in at Kamukunji Police Station.

The arrest drew mixed reactions from various quarters, with Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary, Kipkorir (Korir) Sing’oei criticising the government for this and the high number of arbitrary arrests and abductions reported since the nationwide demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024 began.

“There is a procedure for effecting an arrest. This is not one of them. We must resist the temptation to adopt extra-legal means even in the pursuit of legitimate objectives,” he wrote on X.
