CJ Martha Koome Mourns Death Of Magistrate, Second In 2 Days

CJ Koome sent her condolences to the principal magistrate’s family including his children and the deceased’s wife Purity Koskey who is also a Judge at the Kabarnet Law Courts.

The Judiciary has for the second time in less than a week been thrown into mourning. Chief Justice Martha Koome on Tuesday, October 22 announced the death of Molo Law Courts Principal Magistrate Bernard Kipyegon Rugut.

While mourning Judge Rugut, CJ Koome sent her condolences to the principal magistrate’s family including his children and the deceased’s wife Purity Koskey who is also a Judge at the Kabarnet Law Courts.

“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that I announce the untimely passing of Hon. Bernard Kipyegon Rugut, Principal Magistrate at Molo Law Courts,” the CJ announced in a statement.

“On behalf of the Judiciary, and on my own behalf, I wish to express our deepest condolences to his spouse, Hon. Purity Koskey Rugut of Kabarnet Law Courts, their children, the entire family, relatives, friends, and colleagues of Hon. Rugut during this profoundly difficult time.”

According to the CJ, Rugut began his distinguished career with the Judiciary on July 13, 2012, when he was appointed as a Resident Magistrate and posted to Bondo Law Courts.

She recalled that over the years, he served with steadfast dedication at various stations, including Ndhiwa and Kericho Law Courts, consistently demonstrating a strong commitment to the principles of justice. Most recently, since May 2, 2023, he served as Principal Magistrate at Molo Law Courts in Nakuru County.

“Throughout his career, Hon. Rugut exemplified the virtues of diligence, fairness, and professionalism in all his judicial duties. His passing is not only a significant loss to his family but also to the Judiciary and the communities he faithfully served,” mourned the Chief Justice.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones as we mourn the loss of a dedicated judicial officer whose legacy of service will continue to inspire us all. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

The latest report came barely two days after the demise of Zena Atetwe Rashid Jalenga, a Resident Magistrate at the Milimani Commercial Court. CJ Koome revealed that Jalenga died on the morning of Sunday, October 20 following a long illness.

She remembered Jalenga for her service in the Judiciary where she exhibited firm commitment to the cause of justice and the rule of law, working diligently and in keeping with the values of the Constitution in service to the nation.

Jalenga was among the six people President William Ruto appointed to be part of the Panel to select a chairperson and two members of the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ). She was among the 70 judges CJ Koome appointed on August 9, 2023.

On June 15, Makadara Law Courts Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti died from gunshot injuries she sustained during a shooting incident at the Makadara Law Courts, on Thursday, June 13.
