African Destination Faces Suspension As Kenya Airways Makes Changes

National carrier Kenya Airways on Thursday, July 25 made network adjustments to five key African destinations to optimize operations during the peak season of August.

According to a statement sent to Viral Tea, the adjustments to its network see the airline make use of its flagship Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to two South African destinations as well as the introduction of new daily and non-stop flights.

However, KQ will from August 9, 2024, suspend the five weekly flights to Bangui, Central Africa Republic.

“The cargo service will not be affected by the suspension. Kenya Airways remains committed to continuously optimizing its flight schedule to better align with demand and performance objectives,” the statement read in part.

Passengers holding bookings on affected flights to or from Bangui after the suspension date will be contacted by Kenya Airways to arrange alternative travel options, including rebooking, refunds, or re-routing.

Other network adjustments are as follows:

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Effective July 1, 2024, Kenya Airways has been operating daily flights on the midday-time window, by adding flights on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Johannesburg, South Africa

Effective August 1, 2024, the five weekly flights on the night-time window, will be upgraded to Boeing 787 Dreamliner. This is part of the 26 weekly flights operated by Kenya Airways to Johannesburg, South Africa.

Cape Town, South Africa

Effective August 1, 2024, all three weekly non-stop Nairobi to Cape Town flights will be upgraded to Boeing 787 Dreamliner, offering 30 full lie-flat seats in business and 204 economy seats with generous seat pitches.

Douala, Cameroon

Effective August 11, 2024, all five weekly flights to Douala, Cameroon will be operated non-stop from Nairobi and back without a tag.

This move will offer shorter flight time and better connectivity through Nairobi and beyond.

“In light of the current market landscape and as part of our Business Continuity Plan, we have made the strategic decision to make adjustments on its route networks in order to ensure smoother and more efficient operations,” said Martin Gitonga, KQ’s Head of Network Planning and Alliances.

On June 19, KQ, in resuming flights to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), utilized the spacious and comfortable Airbus A330 aircraft. 

The significant step underscored KQ’s commitment to providing seamless connectivity and exceptional service across Africa.
