Activist Hanifa visits Maverick Aoko in jail after celebrating her arrest

In a surprising turn of events, prominent human rights activist Hanifa Farsafi has expressed support for controversial provocateur Maverick Aoko, just hours after celebrating Aoko’s arrest.

Hanifa, who had previously expressed harsh sentiments toward Aoko, visited her in jail and pledged to stand by her through her legal challenges.

Hanifa shared a photo on social media, showing herself with Aoko at the police station. She revealed that Aoko is set to be arraigned at the Milimani law court on Monday, August 19, 2024, and vowed to be present in court to support her.

“Met with @AokoOtieno_ she’s doing well and sends her regards and love to you all and says Aluta Continua!!!!! She will be arraigned at Milimani court on Monday and we’ll be there too,” Hanifa wrote on X on Saturday evening.

This show of support comes as a complete surprise, given Hanifa’s earlier reaction to Aoko’s arrest.

Before visiting her at the police station, Hanifa explained her sudden change of heart, noting that her opposition to oppression outweighed her personal feelings toward Aoko.

“Fine. I withdraw my aggression and vulgarity towards Aoko. As hurt and as wronged as I am, I do not support the oppression and abductions by the state. #FreeAoko #FreeAoko #FreeAoko,” Hanifa wrote on X.

Hanifa also lamented the harsh treatment she had received from Aoko in the past, describing her as “vile and disgusting.”

In response to a netizen, Hanifa noted that Aoko had been particularly s****e toward her.

“She’s been vile and disgusting honestly na hakuna kitu nishawahi mfanyia. That w***n came here unprovoked and tweeted such nasty things I couldn’t even quote and I’m supposed to take the high moral ground?” Hanifa wrote.

Hanifa goes HAM on Aoko

Before this change of heart, Hanifa had been openly hostile toward Aoko, celebrating her arrest in a series of posts on X, which she has since deleted.

In one post, Hanifa wrote, “I hope and pray that the cells are extremely cold tonight.”

In another, she stated that she could never advocate for Aoko’s release, sarcastically suggesting that Embakasi East MP Babu Owino should fight for her instead.

“Aende apiganiwe na Babu Owino mbwa yeye,” Hanifa wrote. “I will fight for each and everyone of you but not that maniac please. I will never forgive her.”

She had also insisted, “I won’t be gaslit lol. I won’t forget nor forgive what she did to me,” and referred to Aoko as “a vile, disgusting human being.”
