SLY: Netflix documentary about Sylvester Stallone will be closing out the Toronto Film Festival 1

The amazing story and career of film legend Sylvester Stallone will be told in his own words in the Netflix documentary Sly. Even though Stallone admitted in a similar documentary about his action movie rival Arnold Schwarzenegger that he felt Arnold probably came out on top, there is no denying the Cinderella story of Stallone’s career. It’s a picturesque example of making it to the big time by blazing your own trail and believing in yourself. Audiences will be able to see Stallone’s story in Sly when it comes to Netflix in November, but The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the documentary will be heading to the Toronto Film Festival.

Sly is set to have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on September 16 at Roy Thomson Hall. In addition, it will also be closing out the festival. Although the documentary is a Netflix title, the film is not covered by the SAG-AFTRA TV and Film agreements. This means, for Stallone, he is allowed to show up at the festival to walk the red carpet and promote the film. Though, it has not been announced whether or not the action star is set to make an appearance.

The description of the documentary reads, “For nearly 50 years, Sylvester Stallone has entertained millions with iconic characters and blockbuster franchises, from Rocky to Rambo to The Expendables. This retrospective documentary offers an intimate look at the Oscar-nominated actor-writer-director-producer, paralleling his inspirational underdog-story with the indelible characters he has brought to life.”

“I feel very immature. I’ve always been averse to the quote ‘Act your age.’ Or ‘Age gracefully.’ How do you age gracefully? There’s nothing graceful about you. The older I get, the more I try to embrace my inner kid,” Stallone explained in a deep-dive interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

The documentary comes from Springsteen on Broadway director Thom Zimny. Stallone admitted in the Schwarzenegger docuseries Arnold that he felt he hadn’t surpassed the Austrian bodybuilder in terms of career or achievement. The two had been box office rivals in the 80s and 90s but had always remained friendly (even investing together in a tinsel town-themed restaurant called Planet Hollywood. Sly getting his own documentary nearly feels like they don’t quite stop competing, no matter if they have already collaborated in The Expendables movies and Escape Plan. Stallone also made an appearance in the last two Guardians of the Galaxy films as well as The Suicide Squad, so no matter how things are going down with the rights to his Rocky franchise, Stallone has been able to adapt.
