The team behind Sausage Party: Foodtopia, the sequel series to 2016’s Sausage Party, is cooking up something wickedly funny for the 8-episode follow-up to the most talked about food fight in cinema. Speaking with Empire, Seth Rogen says the series will likely strike audiences as “unbelievably shocking” as the writing team goes above and beyond to bring the property to the next level.

Rogen is convinced people will talk about Sausage Party: Foodtopia in ways other animated series fail to inspire. He’s particularly proud of a scene that will leave audiences picking their jaws up off the floor. “There’s one specific scene that had a special screening for the Amazon PR people. You should all just start wrapping your heads around this now. You’ll probably have to talk about this a lot.”

Rogen also notes the series gets so intense that the writers and actors involved with Sausage Party: Foodtopia have added a new layer to their thick skin, saying there’s no turning back from the depth of depravity reached with this new project. For example, Rogen noted Kristen Wiig’s response to pick-up lines she recorded. “We had Kristen Wiig in picking up a few lines the other day, and I think we’ve all become desentised to it, because we’ll just be like, ‘Roll the scene!’, and then she was like, ‘Oh my God?! This is insane!’” I can’t begin to imagine what prompted such an extreme reaction from Wiig, but I look forward to finding out.

Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan direct, with Rogen, Wiig, Michael Cera, David Krumholtz, and Edward Norton returning to voice their characters from the original. Meanwhile, Will Forte, Sam Richardson, Natasha Rothwell, and Yasser Lester join the cast for another unsavory R-rated animated adventure.

“Film used to be the superior art form to television, and we humbly reached the pinnacle of what can be achieved with film in our remarkable opus, Sausage Party,” said Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who serve as executive producers. “But now that film is completely dead and TV is the forever-king of entertainment, we’ve decided to continue the epic adventures of our culinary crew in the soon-to-be-legendary televised masterpiece Sausage Party: Foodtopia. It’s got all the heart, double the puns and triple the food-on-food sex. In other words, it’s exactly what the world needs right now.”

Nothing helps people ignore outrageous food prices, loathsome political posturing, and crippling debt like food causing chaos for your entertainment. Sausage Party: Foodtopia is the American Dream in action if gross-out comedy goes down easier than a stack of pancakes on a relaxing Sunday morning. I wonder what Rogen and Goldberg mean by the word “Foodtopia.” Will the fruits and vegetables search for an oasis where food never spoils or gets eaten? What happens when food products escape the dangers of humankind but find themselves victims of Father Time? Perhaps these questions will be answered when Sausage Party: Footopia comes to Amazon!
