Joel McHale hears about Chevy Chase’s comments from Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast and responds in kind.
The hits resume. Chevy Chase and Joel McHale haven’t heard any bells during the ongoing scuffle between the Community stars. The two have traded barbs behind the scenes of their acclaimed sitcom, and even as the show concluded in 2015 after six seasons, Chevy, who would only be on the show for four seasons, makes no secret of his displeasure on working on the show. McHale equally pulled no punches on how horrible the experience was having the Saturday Night Live alum on the show.
Recently, Chevy Chase appeared on the WTF Podcast with Marc Maron and got blunt about Community not being “funny enough for me, ultimately.” Chase added, “I felt happier being alone. I just didn’t want to be surrounded by that table, every day, with those people. It was too much.” Variety has revealed that McHale’s reply to Chevy was simply, “Hey, no one was keeping you there.” McHale would talk to People about his thoughts on Chevy’s comments, “I mean, we weren’t sentenced to that show. It was like, ‘All right, you could have left if you really wanted that.’ But yeah, you know Chevy. That’s Chevy being Chevy… I wrote about this in my book, but I was like, ‘Hey, the feeling’s mutual, bud.’”
The show amassed a cult fanbase and hopped around from network to streaming when NBC didn’t commit to keeping it. Eventually, the show’s mantra of “six seasons and a movie” gets much closer to fulfilling its destiny as creator Dan Harmon develops the feature that will be a Peacock Original. After such a bumpy road and a fanbase that highly anticipates the payoff, Harmon feels the pressure of delivering on the movie, “I hate to say how terrified I am to do it wrong, because there’s a part of me that knows that that fear cannot possibly result in a good thing,” Harmon confesses. “And you’re not going to get anywhere doing an impression of what you think you should do or what you think they want, but I really don’t want to do it wrong, and it is truly terrifying.”
