Director James Wan says he might return to the horror genre after Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is released
James Wan is currently doing the press rounds for his latest film, the superhero sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (you can read our interview with him on the Aquaman 2 subject HERE), but during a conversation with the folks at Collider he indicated that he may be returning to horror for his next project.
Of course, Wan got into the entertainment industry with horror, directing the franchise starter Saw as his first feature. Since then, he has directed several more horror films and started a couple more franchises in the process: Dead Silence, Insidious, The Conjuring, Insidious: Chapter 2, The Conjuring 2, and Malignant. He also branched out into revenge thriller territory with Death Sentence and directed the blockbusters Furious 7 and Aquaman.
Asked what’s next for him, Wan said, “You know, I have a tendency to want to go back and forth. So, whenever I make a smaller film, I wanna go and make a big film. Whenever I’m doing a big one, I’m like, “Oh, I wanna go and do a smaller film,” and when I do my smaller films, it tends to be a horror film. So, you know, I feel like the itch for horror is potentially calling, but we’ll see.“
An example of this going “back and forth” is the fact that he made The Conjuring 2 between Furious 7 and Aquaman, and made Malignant between the two Aquaman movies.
Wan has also produced several more horror movies that he didn’t direct, overseeing the many Conjuring spin-offs that make up the Conjuring Universe, producing the Insidious prequels and sequels, and bringing movies like Lights Out and M3GAN into the world. He also retains an executive producer credit on the Saw films, but that has been more of a “credit only” situation for the last several sequels.
I always enjoy seeing a new James Wan horror movie, whether it’s a creepy classic along the lines of The Conjuring and Insidious or something insane like Malignant, so I’m glad to hear there’s a possibility he could be returning to the genre after the Aquaman sequel.
