The original The Evil Dead was the feature directorial debut of future A-list director Sam Raimi and stars Bruce Campbell as franchise hero Ash Williams. Even though principle photography was completed at the end of 1979, the film didn’t have its premiere screening until 1981. It then received distribution in 1983. It quickly became a cult classic, so Raimi followed that up with Evil Dead II in 1987 and Army of Darkness in 1992. The franchise then sat dormant for a decade – and while New Line Cinema was interested in making Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash, Raimi, Campbell, and their cohort Rob Tapert instead chose to back an Evil Dead reboot that was released in 2013. Campbell wasn’t in that film, but did battle evil forces for three seasons of the TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead. And now that Campbell is retired from playing the role of Ash on screen, we’ve got the Ash-less Evil Dead Rise.
