Joey Chestnut is returning to Nathan’s hot dog eating contest after year-long ban

Competitive eater Joey Chestnut has announced his return to the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating contest after being banned from the event in 2024.

The competition takes place every year on July 4, and is put together by one of the most well-known hot dog brands in the world – Nathan’s.

Joey Chestnut has been crowned the champion of the hot dog eating contest 16 times, but after taking a marketing deal with one of Nathan’s competitors, he was banned from taking part in the 2024 event.

The competitive eater announced his return on Monday, June 16, and revealed that he’d found “common ground” with Nathan’s that allowed him to participate in this year’s contest.

“I’m thrilled to be returning to the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest,” he announced on X. “This event means the world to me. It’s a cherished tradition, a celebration of American culture, and a huge part of my life.

“While I have and continue to partner with a variety of companies, including some in the plant-based space, those relationships were never a conflict with my love for hot dogs. To be clear: Nathan’s is the only hot dog company I’ve ever worked with.”

He added: “I respect that there were differences in interpretation, but I’m grateful we’ve been able to find common ground. I’m excited to be back on the Coney Island stage, doing what I live to do, and celebrating the Fourth of July with hot dogs in my hands! Stay hungry!”

While Chestnut had to sit out the 2024 event, Patrick Bertoletti brought home the win after eating 58 hot dogs and will have to defend his championship title against Joey this year.
