The Office of the Attorney General & Department of Justice (OAG&DOJ) is seeking qualified legal professionals to fill 78 positions for the role of State Counsel. Position Overview: State Counsel

The position of State Counsel (CSG 9) is an entry-level role, providing new legal practitioners the opportunity to gain experience and training under the guidance of senior officers. With the potential to work in a variety of technical divisions, the position allows for exposure to multiple facets of the legal field within the public sector. As part of a government body dedicated to upholding the law, State Counsels will work in diverse areas of law that serve the public and uphold Kenya’s legal framework.

Remuneration and Benefits

Successful applicants for the position of State Counsel will receive a competitive salary and a range of benefits. The remuneration details are as follows:

  • Basic Salary: Ksh 46,120 to Ksh 65,860 per month, with periodic increments based on performance and progression within the pay grade.
  • Commuter Allowance: A monthly allowance of Ksh 6,000 to assist with transportation.
  • Leave Allowance: An annual allowance of Ksh 6,000 to cover leave-related expenses.
  • Additional Benefits: Employees are entitled to 30 working days of paid leave each year, in addition to a housing allowance based on the region of deployment.

Job Requirements

To qualify for the position of State Counsel, candidates must meet specific educational and professional standards. These include:

  1. Bachelor of Laws (LLB): A degree from a recognized institution, which provides the foundational knowledge required for practicing law in Kenya.
  2. Postgraduate Diploma in Law: Successful completion of this diploma from the Kenya School of Law is necessary for understanding the practical applications of legal principles.
  3. Admission to the High Court of Kenya: Candidates must be admitted as advocates of the High Court, showcasing their readiness for legal practice within Kenya’s judicial framework.
  4. Proficiency in Computer Applications: This skill is essential for managing legal documents, research, and communications efficiently.

These requirements ensure that all candidates are prepared to handle the responsibilities associated with the position and possess the credentials necessary to contribute meaningfully to the OAG&DOJ.

Duties and Responsibilities

State Counsels will work closely with senior officers and may be deployed to one or more of the OAG&DOJ’s technical divisions. Key areas of deployment include:

  • Civil Litigation
  • Legislative Drafting
  • Justice and Constitutional Affairs
  • Public Legal Services
  • Government Legal Services
  • Advocates Complaints Commission
  • Regional Offices

Within these areas, State Counsels will handle a range of legal tasks, gaining exposure to government operations, legal representation, and legislative matters. Working in these divisions allows State Counsels to develop a comprehensive understanding of public law and contribute to significant legal cases and government initiatives.
