The Kenya School of Law is a public legal education provider responsible for the provision of professional legal training as an agent of the Government. The core functions of the School are set out in Section 4 of the KSL Act.  

In order to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in the service delivery, the School wishes to recruit committed, dynamic and result oriented persons who will join the existing strong team of staff to help it realize its vision of being “A centre of excellence in professional legal training, research and consultancy”.

Specifically, we seek to recruit: –

PRINCIPAL LECTURER, ADVOCATES TRAINING PROGRAMME, REF: KSL/ HR01/2023 GRADE: KSL 4,1 POSITION

Overall purpose of the job

Reporting to the Assistant Director Advocates Training Programme, the incumbent will be responsible for training in the Advocates Training Programme and maybe deployed to teach in Paralegal Training Programme.

Job Description

The duties and responsibilities of the officer will entail: –

(i)               Participating in curriculum development and review curricula.

(ii)             Coordinating course or subjects.

(iii)           Organizing, coordinating the legal clinics program in the department.

(iv)           Organizing, coordinating pupilage and pursuing accreditation of the pupillage centres.

(v)             Organizing and coordinating the moot court program and prepare students for moot courts.

(vi)           Exercising supervisory role over other staff in the department.

(vii)         Conducting research in areas of legal training.

(viii)       Teaching or training in the Advocates Training Programme and paralegal studies.

(ix)           Supervising students serving pupillage.

(x)             Preparing students for both national and international moot court competitions to enhance advocacy skills.

(xi)           Verifying student admission documents.

(xii)         Preparing of teaching manuals.

(xiii)        Setting, moderating and marking examinations.

(xiv)        Setting and marking project work and administer oral examinations.

(xv)          Resolving complaints and initiating disciplinary process on matters arising out of pupillage.

(xvi)        Preparing budget for the legal clinic, moot courts and pupilage programs in consultation with the head of department.

Person Specification

To qualify for this position, the applicant must have: –

(i)            At least eight (8) years’ post admission relevant work experience three (3) of which should be in a supervisory role.

(ii)          Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LL.B) from a recognized university.

(iii)        Master’s Degree in Law (LL.M) from a recognized university.

(iv)        Post-graduate Diploma in Law.

(v)          An advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a current practicing certificate.

(vi)        Member of the Law Society of Kenya in good standing.

(vii)      Certificate in management course lasting not less than four (4) weeks will be an added advantage.

(viii)    Fulfilled the requirements of Chapter six of the Constitution.

(ix)        Proficiency in Computer Applications.

INTERNAL AUDITOR – INFORMATION SYSTEMS, GRADE: KSL 6, REF: KSL/HR02/2023, 1 POSITION (RE-ADVERTISEMENT)

Overall purpose of the job

Reporting to the Principal Internal Auditor, the officer will provide an independent and objective assurance on the reliability and integrity of the ICT operating systems, IT infrastructure and the School’s business systems.

Job Description

The duties and responsibilities of the officer will entail: –

(i) Assisting in preparing audit plans for systems and ICT audit reviews.

(ii) Assisting in performing detailed evaluation of internal control and audit reviews of computer information systems and infrastructure.

(iii) Participate in risk-based ICT audits.

(iv) Assisting in providing recommendations to improve internal control.

(v) Assisting in providing policy/system recommendations at development stage.

(vi) Assisting in follow up implementation of audit recommendations.

(vii) Assisting in monitoring the implementation and operation of defined controls.

(viii) Assisting in reviewing data and network security.

Persons’ Specifications

To qualify for this position, the applicant must have: –

(i)            Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or IT related field from recognized institutions.

(ii)          Meet requirements of Chapter 6 of the Constitution.

(iii)        Proficiency in Computer Applications.

(iv)        CISA Certification will be a distinct advantage.

HUMAN RESOURCE ASSISTANT, REF: KSL/ HR03/2023, GRADE: KSL 8, 1 POSITION

Overall purpose of the Job

Reporting to the Principal Human Resource Officer, the incumbent will assist in implementation of human resource policies, procedures and processes.

Job Description

The duties and responsibilities of the officer will entail: –

(i) Assisting in distribution of interview materials to panelist to ensure efficient and effective recruitment.

(ii) Assisting in preparation of vouchers for all deductions to facilitate the Finance Department to prepare payments to the respective entities.

(iii) Assisting in extraction of monthly summaries from the payroll for inclusion in the management reports to facilitate decision making.

(iv) Assisting in uploading the NHIF, NSSF and NITA byproducts to ensure compliance with statutory requirements.

(v) Assisting in sorting out job applications, filling appropriately and preparing application profiles in readiness for shortlisting.

(vi) Assisting in processing of leave.

(vii) Assisting in opening personnel files for new staff and ensuring all required documents are filed.

(viii) Assisting in issuance of staff identification cards.

Person Specifications

To qualify for this position, the applicant must: –

(i)         Have a Diploma in Human Resource Management or CHRP I from a recognized institution.

(ii)       Meet requirements of Chapter 6 of the Constitution.

(iii)     Have a certificate in Computer Applications.

ADJUNCT LECTURERS, ADVOCATES TRAINING PROGRAMME, REF: KSL/ HR04/2023

Overall purpose of the job

The adjunct lecturer will provide training services in the Advocates Training Programme. The School is seeking to enhance the data base of adjunct lecturers and those recruited will be allocated classes on a need basis.

Areas of Specialization

The required expertise is in the following course units: –

1.       Civil Litigation

2.       Criminal Litigation

3.       Probate and Administration

4.       Trial Advocacy

5.       Legal Writing and Drafting

6.       Professional Ethics

7.       Conveyancing

8.       Commercial Transactions

9.       Legal Practice Management- (Office Practice, Human Resources and Accounting)

Person Specification

The successful candidates should: –

(i)            Possess an LLB or equivalent and an LLM or equivalent from a recognized university.

(ii)          Possess B.COM or equivalent with Accounting Major and Masters in Science/Business Administration (Accounting or finance full Professional qualifications in Accounting CPA or Equivalent 6 years and above teaching experience. (Accounting lecturers need not necessarily be lawyers or advocates of the High Court)

(iii)        Trial Advocacy lecturers should be trained and examined by The National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA).

(iv)        Be admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with at least five years post admission experience.

(v)          A member of the relevant professional body and in good standing. 

(vi)        Holds a current Practicing Certificate.

(vii)      Have the ability to conduct legal training at a practical level.  

(viii)    Have been trained in Andragogy skills. 

(ix)        Possess excellent communication skills with the ability to prepare and present concise oral and  written reports. 

(x)          Have excellent planning and organizational skills.  

(xi)        Have good Information Communication Technology skills.  

(xii)      Have good customer care and public relations skills.  

(xiii)     Possess good interpersonal relations skills and be a team player.  

(xiv)     Have the ability to work under minimal supervision. 

EXAMINATION MODERATORS PARALEGAL TRAINING PROGRAMME   REF: KSL/HR05/2023

The School wishes to engage external examinations moderators for the Diploma in Law Programme.

 Person Specification

The successful candidates should: –

(i)      Possess a Bachelor degree in a relevant field from a recognized university.

(ii)    For those with legal background, one must be admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and hold a current Practicing Certificate.

(iii)  Have four (4) years relevant teaching experience at tertiary level.
