The International Organization for Migration (IOM) upholds the principle that humane, orderly migration benefits both individuals and society. At IOM’s Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Nairobi, we conduct essential pre-migration health assessments for migrants and refugees. IOM is seeking a skilled Senior Migration Health Nurse to join our MHAC team in Kakuma, Kenya. Reporting to the Head of Sub-Office (HSO) and directly supervised by the Migration Health Physician (MHP) with technical guidance from the Migration Health Nurse Officer, the successful candidate will oversee nursing operations and contribute to IOM’s mission of safe migration.

Responsibilities

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and Oversee Health Assessments: Coordinate daily nursing and administrative operations for migration health assessments, covering medical exams, imaging, lab tests, vaccinations, tuberculosis (TB) management, pre-departure processes, and counselling.
  • Direct and Supervise Team Activities:
    • Assign tasks to nursing staff and oversee sessions on pre-examination information, counselling, and follow-ups.
    • Ensure accurate data entry by nurses and clerical staff in relevant databases, following specific guidelines.
    • Implement and monitor fraud-prevention protocols, especially for tests conducted outside MHAC.
  • Optimize Workflow: Develop and implement strategies to streamline tasks for timely completion, promoting efficient clinic workflow.
  • Identity Verification: Ensure all migrant/refugee identity verification protocols are rigorously applied and monitored.
  • Quality Assurance:
    • Implement and uphold quality assurance and control measures for nursing and clerical processes.
    • Contribute to SOP creation, staff training, and ensure compliance with MHAC procedures.
    • Verify stock, medical kits, and emergency supplies, ensuring adherence to guidelines.
  • Procurement Coordination: Manage MHAC procurement, including purchase orders, invoices, and payment requests.
  • Data and Reporting:
    • Collect and analyze administrative data and generate reports, flagging inconsistencies to the Chief Migration Health Officer or Migration Health Nurse Officer.
    • Coordinate mobile missions as needed and perform medical escort duties for migrant care during travel.
    • Maintain collaborative relationships with IOM departments, health providers, and partner organizations for seamless follow-up and data sharing.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervise designated team members and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited institution required.
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in a related field is advantageous.
  • Valid nursing license in the duty station country.

Experience:

  • For Bachelor’s degree holders, at least five years of relevant clinical experience, including a minimum of two years in a supervisory role.
  • Proven technical skills, particularly in phlebotomy, with preferred experience in tuberculosis management, immunizations, infectious diseases, laboratory testing, or public health.
  • Familiarity with patient safety, infection control, and preventive healthcare principles.
  • Strong managerial skills are desirable.
