The job holder is responsible for leading in designing, implementing, monitoring and reporting communication and branding policies and strategies in line with the institutional strategic plan. Driving internal standards and external visibility for effective delivery of the IMLU’s interventions. Monitoring media reporting and trends on topics of strategic importance to IMLU. Editing and quality control of all IMLU publications.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE JOBS Managerial / Supervisory/ Operational Responsibilities or roles:

1)      Develops and leads the implementation of IMLU’s communication strategies and policies and ensures they are in line with the strategic plan and are adhered to in all materials, events, communications, branding, speech, and partnerships;
2)      Prepares and or advises on communication tools and materials: publications, reports, information education and communication materials including posters, pamphlets, flyers, and stickers;
3)      Edits and quality control of all publications and recommend for approval to the Head of Programmes;
4)      Draft press statements and feature pitches and send them to key media outlets as needed;
5)      Convenes and coordinates media and publicity events;
6)      Design annual media, branding and visibility strategy and work plan and lead in effective implementation;
7)      Maintains a calendar of upcoming media moments;
8)      Maintain an up-to-date calendar of all IMLU events on the website calendar and all social media platforms;
9)      Supports the development of TORs for content trips and helps to package and share stories to be used across digital and fundraising channels at national, regional and international levels;
10)   Drafts web articles and social media posts as needed and ensures it is current, updated interactive and catchy in line with IMLU’s publicity, branding and communications objectives;
11)   Overall responsible for IMLU’s annual reports and newsletter;
12)   Lead all IMLU social media including an up-to-date website;
13)   Ensures timely, consistent and effective media monitoring to assess the level of coverage and respond to arising issues/criticism (negative or positive);

14)   Ensure that communication and media opportunities are identified and responded to ensure that IMLU is a credible source for the media, partners, donors, governments, communities and IMLU staff;
15)   Ensures the Resource Centre is up-to-date, secure and accessible to users;
16)   Manages the network of journalists and ensures it is efficiently and effectively managed towards fulfilling institutional Vision and Mission;
17)   Works with other programme teams to ensure the collection and documentation of interesting case studies, success stories, and lessons learnt from field-based programmes in all locations and sectors, for use in advocacy and media work and quality reporting purposes;
18)   Mentors, coaches, supports and motivates staff towards high-performance levels;
19)   Leads in developing effective and productive linkages with other programs in line with IMLU’s holistic approach;
20)   Ensures identification of communications financial needs and writing funding proposals;
21) Develop networks and partnerships with other human rights organizations involved in the anti-torture campaign;
22)   Develop and implement an effective strategy for profiling the IMLU network of volunteers and the success they deliver to vulnerable persons
23)   Actively participates and represents the organisation in various networks/platforms and movements to share and promote IMLU objectives on various issues; and
24)   Develops funding proposals and ensure adequate budgeting of all, branding, visibility and communications interventions;
25)   Any other duty assigned from time to time.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum level of academic qualification, skills and knowledge required to perform effectively in the role:

Education: 

Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, Media production or a related field.

Language Skills: High Proficiency in English and Swahili is required.

Minimum level of professional qualification required to perform effectively in the role: 

A Post Graduate Diploma in Mass Communication, media studies, public relations or equivalent qualifications

Minimum level of personal and professional experience required to perform effectively in the role:

1.  Demonstrable experience of human rights, the Constitution and relevant laws

2. High listening skills

3. Receives feedback positively and acts on feedback to improve self and performance;

4.  Effective communication skills with audiences Highly effective in identifying and nurturing partnerships

Minimum months or years of experience required to be appointed to the position:

Minimum: 3 years of experience in a similar role

Desirable: 5 years of relevant experience in leading a similar docket
