Job description

Role

  • To ensure the efficient and effective delivery of high standards of hygiene across the branches and to facilitate all aspects of the waste management services. The hygiene and sanitation officers’ role is a shift-based position that is responsible for the implementation of cleaning and hygiene objectives of the shift. It is also the role of the hygiene and sanitation officer to ensure that all equipment on his/her shift are handled in the correct method, and all staff are trained adequately.
  • The role requires extensive and detailed knowledge of all operational equipment, cleaning practices and safety procedures relating to handling potentially dangerous and harmful chemicals. It also includes maintaining hygiene standards to meet requirements applicable to food safety and hygiene legislations. 

Key Responsibility Areas

Hygiene

  • To ensure all aspects of the hygiene service are carried out and maintained to the required standards.
  • To ensure the hygiene budget is met and all expenditures are authorized and recorded.
  • To guide in the ordering and stock control of hygiene consumables and chemicals.
  • To maintain detailed cleaning instructions and schedules for every hygiene activity.
  • Work in conjunction with hygiene and sanitation manager in management of the pest control contract and overseeing the completion of all pest prevention actions to the required standards.
  • To oversee the day to day running of the staff facilities including maintenance of stocks /consumables in the staff breakout areas, staff washroom facilities and other associated equipment.
  • To conduct compliance audits / inspections of internal hygiene standards and documentation.
  • To facilitate the provision of hygiene chemicals and dosing equipment in the branches – to include regular reviews with chemical supplier, periodic chemical dosing checks, maintenance of equipment and to oversee the safe storage, decant, transport and use of chemicals at the branches.
  • To liaise with procurement to obtain the most suitable and cost-effective equipment and consumables and to effectively manage supplier non-conformance in a timely manner.
  • To support the Technical & QA team in obtaining water samples for testing and participating in microbiological investigations or projects to drive improvements in branch hygiene standards.
  • To provide training and awareness for all staff on hygiene and waste handling and procedures relevant.

Waste/ Environment                         

  • To oversee the segregation, storage and timely removal of all waste.
  • To liaise with the external waste contractors and ensure they operate in a legally compliant and safe manner at all times including retaining copies of all appropriate waste licenses and Duty of Care documentation.
  • To ensure the external yard waste areas are maintained in a safe, controlled and hygienic manner at all times.

Strategy/ Planning                        

  • Ensures that all staff are formally trained and signed off in regards departmental SOP’s to ensure proper and safe use of equipment in a hygienic condition.

Implementation                        

  • Responsible for implementing the hygiene plan for branches on a daily basis that ensures optimum efficiency of resources.
  • Applies effective working knowledge and process monitoring skills of all relevant equipment in his/her area that ensures optimum throughout and quality measures.
  • Uses a team-based approach to investigate root cause, identify solutions and implement changes when monitoring systems indicate poor hygiene performance.

Reporting and Evaluation                        

  • Actively engages and participates in the branch meetings and shares relevant updates with the team to ensure that appropriate and timely decisions are made to optimize hygiene performance for the day.
  • Responsible for the accurate and timely completion of documents that are relevant to the section, such as cleaning schedule completion and chemical consumption rates/cost of cleaning per shift
  • Regularly and systematically reviews performance of the hygiene practices, being environmental and equipment sanitation.

Budgeting                        

  • Is aware of the financial implications of his/her decisions, and the overall performance of the branches, and takes appropriate actions to avoid negative impact on the business. Such factors include over use of chemicals, re-cleaning due to poor practices and the cost of staffing related to hygiene practices
  • Drive cost savings in hygiene and waste overheads to ensure annual forecasts are achieved.
  • Actively engages with the repair and maintenance departments to ensure that deep cleaning is achieved where machine downtime is required, and adequately stripped down where normal daily disassembly is not sufficient.

Qualifications                         

  • Bachelor of Food Science or diploma in relevant field.

Experience

  • Minimum two to three year work experience as hygiene and sanitization officer in a hotel/ restaurant or similar large restaurant complex or cleaning equipment, plant and environment.
  • Experience in the cleaning of highly sensitive equipment preferred.
  • Qualification or experience in ISO 22000/HACCP.

Special Conditions of Employment

  • Flexible approach to working and committed to occasional night shifts and weekend working.
  • Experience of conducting training on a one on one basis or to small groups.
  • HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) – ISO 22000 (Food Safety Management System)/ Quality Management System.
