High Commission of Canada to Kenya Hiring Consular Officer

Under the supervision of the Deputy Management Consular Officer (DMCO), the Consular Officer manages the delivery of consular services on behalf of the High Commission of Canada, contributes to the High Commission’s emergency management preparation in support of the Canadian community, liaises with Canada’s Honorary Consul in Uganda and provides administrative support to the program.

Duties

The Consular Officer assists in managing the delivery of passport and citizenship services to Canadians within the Mission’s area of accreditation (Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Somalia and South-Sudan);

  1. Provides notarial services; oversees the delivery of routine and general assistance and information to the Canadian community which includes developing of social media campaigns;
  2. Developing and maintaining awareness of the local environment and building a network of relationships to facilitate the delivery of consular services;
  3. Supervising the Consular Coordinators and Clerk;
  4. Providing administrative support, including financial, to the Consular program, and performing other related duties, including but not limited to supporting consular related visits by Canadian government officials as well as assisting the Mission in its operations and activities as directed.   

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience.

Education:

Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education.

  • Degree from a recognized university. 

RATED REQUIREMENTS

The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview (online pre-recorded/live or in-person), role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

Knowledge:

  • Extensive knowledge of the local environment, particularly of the structure of local authorities and the services they offer
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word and Excel) and Internet research skills.

Competencies:

  • Excellent client service – including the ability to conduct client interviews, identify and prioritise client needs, adhere to policies and procedures and recognise constraints
  • Adaptability and Flexibility
  • Thinks things through and uses good judgement

Operational Requirements:

  • Working hours: 37.5 hours per week compressed, Monday to Thursday (7.30am to 4.00pm), Friday (7.30am to 1pm)
  • Willing and able to work overtime (i.e. evenings and weekends), as required on short notice
  • May be required to travel locally and internationally
  • Requirement to work directly with the public in situations which may be psychologically and emotionally difficult
