About DRC

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a humanitarian, non-governmental, and non-profit organization founded in 1956, operating in over 35 countries. DRC is one of the largest protection actors in Kenya, coordinating and advocating for better protective environments for refugees and host communities. DRC’s programs include Protection monitoring, Child Protection, and GBV prevention and response, aiming to address the protection issues faced by displaced and non-displaced at-risk groups and individuals. The program also collaborates with DRC’s Economic Recovery sector and Humanitarian Disarmament & Peace Building activities to respond to the needs of communities affected by crises and protracted displacement situations.

Overall Purpose of the Role

The Advocacy & Communications Assistant will support the DRC Urban Area Program’s efforts to influence decision-makers and individuals to change policies, practices, attitudes, or behavior to address the needs of refugees and host communities. This role will also amplify DRC’s work in line with donor projects and the organizational advocacy, visibility, and communications strategy/guidelines.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Communication Plans: Develop and implement communication plans (internal and external) and activities per DRC’s policy and guidelines.
  • Support Project Leads: Work closely with the Advocacy and Communication Officer to support project leads in developing, implementing, and reviewing the urban advocacy strategy and ensuring high-quality communication products.
  • Technical Support: Provide technical support and advice to project staff and partners on advocacy and communication deliverables.
  • Stakeholder Visits: Assist in coordinating visits by donors and other stakeholders to the Urban program area.
  • Photo Repository: Maintain a repository of high-quality photos of DRC’s work within the Urban program.
  • Social Media Content: Assist in developing social media content and administering DRC’s social media platforms.
  • Field Visits: Conduct regular field visits to document human interest stories, successes, and the impact of DRC’s work.
  • Develop Materials: Contribute to developing project information sheets, donor briefs, key messaging, and other relevant materials.
  • Capacity Development: Conduct advocacy and communication capacity development or training for Urban program staff and partners.
  • Brand Guidelines: Ensure adherence to DRC’s brand guidelines and donor branding guidelines during project implementation, procurement, and external communication.
  • External Representation: Support DRC Urban Project Managers and the Advocacy and Communications Manager during external representation, budget management, and donor reporting.
  • Fundraising: Contribute to concept notes and proposal development in advocacy and communication frameworks and designs.

Experience and Technical Competencies

  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience in advocacy, campaigning, or communications.
  • Evidence of successful advocacy campaigns, preferably on refugee documentation issues.
  • Experience in building constructive working relationships with diverse stakeholders or working with networks or coalitions.
  • Understanding of effective advocacy and campaigning strategies, including familiarity with online and social media campaigning.
  • Understanding of the urban refugee context and adaptability to dynamic work demands.
  • Strong planning, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Good analytical and strategic planning skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas simply, both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent computer skills with MS applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Education

  • Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, development studies, or social science. A Master’s degree in a similar field is an added advantage.

Language

  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Kiswahili.

Conditions

  • Contract: One-year contract with the possibility of extension, subject to funding and performance.
  • Availability: September 2024
  • Duty Station: Urban Program, Eastleigh Office
