Job Purpose
This senior technical role focuses on development economics and championing evidence-based economic analysis across the British High Commission’s (BHC) workstreams. The position supports the UK-Kenya Strategic Partnership, which aims to strengthen mutual prosperity, security, stability, sustainable development, climate action, democracy, and human rights.

The role is embedded in the Strategy, Assurance, and Results Team (START), which ensures quality, accountability, and evidence-driven decision-making within BHC’s work.


Key Responsibilities

  1. Economic Analysis and Development
    • Assess the value added by programmes in the development portfolio.
    • Conduct diagnostics or “what works” analysis in key sectors and geographies.
    • Provide economic context and recommendations for policy and project decisions.
  2. Value for Money Strategy
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive value-for-money strategy.
    • Support teams in appraising and improving programme impact and cost-effectiveness.
  3. Evidence and Data Management
    • Maintain a statistical database of economic data to support programme work.
    • Promote the use of reliable statistics and rigorous analysis in decision-making and reporting.
  4. Engagement with FCDO Economist Network
    • Dedicate 10% of working time to support wider FCDO objectives, such as programme reviews, evidence generation, and training delivery.
  5. Team Collaboration
    • Actively support team members and contribute to corporate initiatives within the BHC.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Essential

  • Master’s degree in Economics.
  • 5+ years of experience in economics and development.
  • Demonstrable expertise in delivering high-quality economic analysis that informs policy.
  • Strong microeconomic skills (e.g., demand-supply analysis, market analysis, behavioural economics).
  • Proficiency in data analysis and drawing actionable, policy-relevant conclusions.
  • Excellent communication skills to explain complex economic concepts to non-specialists.
  • Experience and understanding of Kenya’s development context.
  • Proven ability to work with diverse teams and adjust to complex international engagements.
