Main purpose of job:
The Communications Manager sits within the broader Kenya and Somalia Communications Team based at the British High Commission Nairobi. The Communications Manager leads communications outputs (internal and external) for the British Embassy Mogadishu and the broader Somalia Network, promoting UK activity in Somalia to the public.Â
Roles and responsibilities:
- Managing and maintaining existing internal communications channels, including the monthly staff bulletin.
- Managing external communications to promote the work of the UK in Somalia and the UK-Somalia strategic partnership.
- This includes but is not limited to: organising media events and interviews; drafting social media messages and press releases; building and maintaining networks with media and journalists; and providing media advice and handling.
- Publish and update content on the UK Government’s website – GOV.UK – including news stories and documentation, to a high standard and in accordance with the GOV.UK style guide.
- Compile a daily social media and media monitoring summary.
- Contribute to corporate life at the British High Commission Nairobi and the British Embassy Mogadishu.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience 1Â
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Experience working in the media sector or communications.
- Knowledge of the media landscape in Somalia.
- Knowledge of the social media landscape in Somalia and social media trends.
- A high proficiency of spoken and written English.
