Position: Development Economist (57/24 NR)

Duration: Fixed-term (24 months)
Working Hours: 36.25 hours per week
Location: Nairobi, British High Commission
Salary: KES 532,256.22 monthly
The Development Economist will play a key technical role in championing and utilizing economic analysis to support the British High Commission’s strategic goals. This role is part of the Strategy, Assurance, and Results Team (START), which drives excellence and credibility in our actions.
Main Purpose of the Role
Your objective is to enhance the use of economics, evidence, and data to inform policy and maximize the impact of our work. You will use innovative methods and collaborate with a global network of economists to strengthen our approach to development economics
Roles and Responsibilities
- Enhancing Economic Analysis in Development Work
- Conduct diagnostic or “what works” analysis on key sectors.
- Perform contextual economic and development analysis for sectors or regions.
- Assess the value-added of development programmes.
- Improving Value for Money (VfM) Analysis
- Develop a VfM strategy for development portfolios.
- Conduct detailed value analysis of programmes.
- Promote evidence-based recommendations to optimize resources.
- Strengthening Evidence Use
- Maintain a statistical database on key economic data relevant to British High Commission (BHC) programmes.
- Promote the use of high-quality statistics and analysis in internal and external reporting.
- Ensure quality assurance of economic inputs across BHC operations.
- Contributing to the FCDO Economist Community
- Dedicate up to 10% of your time to broader FCDO objectives, including training, annual reviews, or developing evidence-based products.
- Active Membership in the START Team
- Support colleagues, contribute to corporate initiatives, and lead specific workstreams as required.
