Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT) seeks to recruit a competent and highly motivated individual as a Project Accountant for its GIZ supported Knowledge Hub for Eastern Africa project to be based in its Head Office in Nairobi.

About Biovision Africa Trust
BvAT, a not-for-profit organization established in Kenya in 2009 is situated on the main campus of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) in Kasarani, Nairobi. The Trust’s goal is to alleviate poverty and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Kenya and other African countries, through dissemination of information and knowledge and building capacity of famers for uptake of appropriate technology in order to improve human, animal, plant, and environmental health. BvAT runs a Farmer Communication Programme in East Africa (Kenya and Tanzania), the African Union Ecological Organic Agriculture (EOA) initiative in nine countries and in collaboration with PELUM Uganda coordinates the Knowledge Hub for Eastern Africa (KHEA) in five countries under the global Knowledge Centre for Organic Agriculture in Africa (KCOA) covering the five regions of Africa – West, East, North, Central and Southern Africa.

Job Purpose:
The overall purpose of this position is to ensure the financial integrity, transparency and accountability of all financial transactions related to the KHEA project activities. The accountant is also expected to provide consolidated financial plans and reports for the project as needed within the requirements of the donor and partners.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure financial project reports are prepared in accordance with contractual agreements.
  • Liaise with auditor and prepare audit schedules during project and institution Audits.
  • Prepare asset register for project assets and ensure they are fully depreciated as at time of purchase.
  • Prepare project transfer requests upon receipt of partners’ invoices.
  • Submission of financial reports to the donors.
  • Ensure to comply with internal and external regulations with the respective support to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Recognize grant income; respond to donor queries relating to programmes/ projects.
  • Provide support to sub grantees such as facilitation in capacity building and reviewing reports.
  • Reconciling the project cash flow and restricted income balance.
  • Work with partners finance staff on project financial requirements to understand and properly implement cost allocations, and payroll project allocations, as well as procedures to implement payroll journal entries in line with best practices.
  • Tracking of budget utilization to ensure utilization is within the approved budget.
  • Ensure project full cost recoveries and other recharges are accurately calculated and posted.

Working Relationships:
Internal Relationships: All departments
External Relationships: Donors, Partners, sub-grantees, supplier, Government bodies, external and internal auditors.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounts or related field from accredited institution of higher learning).
  • Must be CPA (K) holders or an equivalent related field from accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Minimum 5 years working experience in a demanding environment or an international organization, on general accounting ledger, financial reporting and presentation skills with the ability to present complex issues clearly and concisely.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in finance/accounting principles (comply with regulations and laws).
  • Experience in monitoring implementation of project activities.
  • Proven ability to work with multiple teams.
  • Experience of leading on financial aspects of multi-country donor contract management and providing advice on complex financial management.
  • Sound knowledge of project monitoring and evaluation.
  • Networking and partnership building skills.
  • Working experience with accounting software (e.g. on use of ERP- Microsoft Dynamics 365 and SAGE).
