AFIDEP Hiring Senior Researcher & Post-doctoral Fellow

The African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) is a regional non-profit research and policy Institute established in 2010 to help bridge the gaps between research, policy and practice in development efforts in Africa.

Our primary purpose is to contribute to sustainable development through the use of evidence and advocacy to strengthen political commitment and resource allocation for development issues; informing the design and implementation of effective interventions; and strengthening governance and accountability structures for tracking development challenges in Africa.

AFIDEP is registered as a Non-Governmental Organisation in both Kenya and Malawi (where it has offices) and as a non-profit institution in the USA with 501(c)3 status. For further details about AFIDEP and its work refer to www.afidep.org.

AFIDEP is looking to recruit an experienced senior researcher and a postdoctoral researcher who will join our Environment and Climate Change Group to conduct research, policy analysis and engagement on the interlinkages between climate change, health and economic wellbeing.

The positions will be based at either AFIDEP’s Lilongwe or Nairobi office.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

SENIOR RESEARCHER

He/she will Lead the conceptualization, design and implementation of research, capacity building and policy engagement programmes on the nexus between climate change, health, food security, and other development issues as follows:

  1. Generate evidence using innovative and rigorous research methods as appropriate to answer key policy questions.
  2. Dissemination research findings in high-quality journals, conferences and through public engagement.
  3. Conduct evidence syntheses and knowledge translation for a range of audiences.
  4. Develop advocacy products and proactively promote application of research findings in decision-making processes at national, regional, and international levels.
  5. Strengthen capacity in research, knowledge translation, dissemination and evidence use by policy makers and other stakeholders.
  6. Lead an inter-disciplinary team of researchers within and across research groups.
  7. Contribute as an expert in national, regional, and global climate change discourses.
  8. Raise funds for continued work in climate change impacts.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW

He/she will be responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and implementing research, capacity building, and policy engagement programs on the nexus between climate change, health, food security, and other development issues as follows:

  1. Conduct independent and collaborative research on the interlinkages between climate change, health, food security, and other development issues.
  2. Dissemination research findings in high-quality journals, conferences and through public engagement.
  3. Conduct evidence syntheses and knowledge translation for a range of audiences.
  4. Develop advocacy products and proactively promote application of research findings in decision-making processes at national, regional, and international levels.
  5. Strengthen capacity in research, knowledge translation, dissemination and evidence use by policy makers and other stakeholders
  6. Contribute as an expert in national, regional, and global climate change discourses.
  7. Raise funds for continued work in climate change impacts.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD in Environmental Studies/Climate Change, Biodiversity and Conservation or related field.
  • Proven experience in climate change research with a focus on interlinkages with health, food security, gender or other development issues.
  • Experience in inter- and multi-disciplinary research approaches with significant strengths in either quantitative methods or qualitative methods and a good understanding of the other.
  • Proven experience in scientific writing and writing policy-oriented products.
  • Excellent communication skills in English. Knowledge of French is desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with effective team management skills.
  • For the Senior Researcher: A minimum of 8 years’ experience of which at least five 5 years should be post PhD. Experience of managing large research programmes and developing partnerships.
  • For Post-doctoral Fellow: Applicants should be within four years of PhD thesis submission.
