Hollow Knight: Silksong fans have been waiting years for a release date, but the devs are already hinting at post-launch DLC.
Ever since it was first announced back in 2019, Hollow Knight: Silksong, a sequel to the critically acclaimed metroidvania, has been one of the most anticipated games in development. However, after years of silence and speculation, there’s still no official release date.
Many had hoped that it would be shadowdropped during Summer Game Fest, and while this didn’t turn out to be the case, it featured heavily in the ROG Xbox Ally handheld reveal. Even better than that, Team Cherry also confirmed it will finally arrive sometime in late 2025.
But as the wait for the sequel goes on, a dev working on the project has already suggested that there will be DLC after lanch.
Hollow Knight: Silksong could get DLC after launch
In the chat of Primacon’s June 11 YouTube stream, Silksong’s marketing lead, Matthew “Leth” Griffin, replied to questions about the game’s post-launch plans, simply saying: “There’s always DLC.”
While this was great news for some players, who were exicted at the prospect of receiving more content down the line, others were less positive. Responding a Reddit post from ‘Dreak1319,’ fans questioned whether expansions should be discussed before the main game has been released.
“RELEASE THE GOD DAMN GAME BEFORE TALKING ABOUT DLC!” said one reply.
“We don’t even have a game, where did the dlc come from?” added another.
Fans also joked that Team Cherry might be getting themselves stuck in a familiar cycle: “Sure hope this DLC doesnt turn into a full fledged game that takes 8 years to develop.”
This is in reference to Silksong starting life as DLC for the original Hollow knight, before transforming into a fully-fledged sequel.
While this isn’t exactly confirmation of Silksong DLC, as it’s possible that this was meant more as a light-hearted joke, it wouldn’t be surprising. The first game received four free downloadable expansions, which added new features, levels, and bosses.
So, it remains to be seen exactly what happens when the game finally hits shelves later this year, but it’s highly likely that launch is only the beginning.
