Fortnite is putting V-Bucks cards on the chopping block after six years. The iconic prepaid cards that fueled countless skin purchases are fading away, making room for a new kind of gift card.
I’m sure you know V-Bucks have been Fortnite’s premium currency since the Battle Royale launch in 2017. Players earned or bought these shiny digital coins to snag skins, emotes, and Battle Passes.
Originally, you could grind for V-Bucks in the Save the World mode through quests and defenses. Later, they became the lifeblood of the Battle Royale Item Shop. To make spending easier and safer, Epic introduced V-Bucks cards, prepaid cards you could grab at stores in 2019.
In 2025, Epic is retiring these classic V-Bucks cards. Starting June, Fortnite gift cards will replace them.
V bucks cards are on their last life
These new cards aren’t just for Fortnite V-Bucks anymore. Instead, they add funds to your Epic account balance, letting you buy V-Bucks, Fortnite Crew subscriptions, in-game packs, and even games or DLCs from the Epic Games Store.
The rollout begins in regions like the US, UK, France, and Germany, with more to follow. You can still redeem your old V-Bucks cards, but eventually, they’ll disappear from shelves.
The new Fortnite gift cards come with perks: redeem one, and you unlock the exclusive GHOST Monks Outfit through 2026. Plus, every purchase nets you 20% back in Epic Rewards on Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys when using Epic’s payment system.
Epic Games is pushing toward a seamless digital wallet across platforms. This move signals Fortnite’s future: a fully integrated online store that works without opening the game, with evolving prices and perks that keep players hooked beyond just the battlefield.
The V-Bucks card era may be ending, but Fortnite has tons of plans for the future, including a Squid Game collab and releasing the AI tech that made Darth Vader’s talking NPC possible to players.
