Former Arsenal superstar, Carlos Vela has announced his retirement after a 19-year career.
The Mexican striker came through Arsenal’s academy after joining from Guadalajara aged 16 and spent seven years at the Emirates.
The 36-year-old has been without a club for six months since leaving Los Angeles FC (LAFC), but has now decided to hang up his boots.
He wrote on Instagram: ‘Throughout my career, I have experienced very special moments, but the time has come to officially retire from professional soccer.
‘There are not enough words to express my gratitude to my family, all the clubs that gave me a chance, and the fans for their support and affection.
‘Thank you, Carlos.
‘It has been an honor and a privilege to share my career with all of you.’
His team-mates were quick to pay tribute, with former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez commenting: ‘A true pleasure to have shared so many moments with you. I love you.’
Antoine Griezmann, who played with Vela at Real Sociedad, wrote: ‘I love you very much, Carlitos, thank you for your friendship.’
Mexico’s goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa added: ‘An honor to share the field with you, always a legend! You’ll be missed on the pitch.’
Vela began his professional career in England with Arsenal in 2005, making 62 total appearances for the Gunners while also playing for Salamanca, Osasuna and West Brom on loan.
The forward joined La Liga side Real Sociedad in 2011, where he became one of the club’s top players before leaving in 2017. Vela made over 200 career appearances in all competitions for Sociedad, scoring 72 goals while being named the club’s player of the year in 2011-12 and 2013-14.
Vela played in the 2010 and 2018 World Cup with Mexico, scoring 19 goals over 72 caps with El Tri.
The Mexican international made 72 caps for his country. He led his country to win the U-17 World Cup (2005) and two Gold Cups (2009, 2015). He won the Golden Boot at the U-17 World Cup, fueling a transfer to Arsenal.
