Career
Krist Anthony Novoselic is an American musician and activist best known as the co-founder and bassist of the iconic grunge rock band Nirvana. Novoselic, along with the late Kurt Cobain, formed Nirvana in 1987, and the duo’s musical partnership shaped the course of rock music history.
During Nirvana‘s 1992 Reading concert, Novoselic sang Oakland punk band Fang’s The Money Will Roll Right In with Cobain, showcasing his versatility as a performer. Novoselic was an occasional vocalist and backing vocalist in Nirvana, singing songs like Scoff and Rape Me at live shows, stating, “I kind of discovered my voice for the first time, and the more I did it, the better it got.”
Nirvana‘s abrupt end in April 1994, following Cobain‘s tragic death, was a profound loss for the music industry and Novoselic. For most of the rest of that year, Novoselic retreated from the spotlight, though one of his few public appearances came that September at the MTV Video Music Awards, where the video for Nirvana‘s Heart-Shaped Box was awarded Best Alternative Video. Novoselic used the moment to pay tribute to his dear friend and collaborator, Cobain.
After Cobain‘s passing, Novoselic continued to pursue his musical interests, co-founding the band Sweet 75 with Venezuelan musician Yva Las Vegass in 1995, and releasing a self-titled album in 1997.
He also collaborated with various artists, including singer Johnny Cash, guitarist Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, and drummer Sean Kinney of Alice in Chains, to record a cover of Willie Nelson‘s Time of the Preacher for the tribute album Twisted Willie in 1996.
In 1998, Novoselic directed his first movie, L7: The Beauty Process, a pseudo-documentary featuring concert footage from 1997. The following year, he joined Jello Biafra and Kim Thayil in the No WTO Combo, further showcasing his passion for music.
Alongside his musical endeavors, Novoselic has been a dedicated activist, especially in the realm of politics. He has shown a keen interest in political issues, including the Northern Ireland conflict between Irish Nationalists and Unionists, from a young age.
