Early Life & Education

Kelly McGillis was raised in Los Angeles and grew up in Newport Beach, California, on July 9, 1957. She was the eldest of three daughters born to Virginia Joan (née Snell), a homemaker, and Donald Manson McGillis, a physician. McGillis attended Newport Harbor High School.

After graduating high school, she pursued her passion for acting and enrolled at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California.

Later, she moved to New York City to study at the Juilliard School, where she graduated in 1983.

Personal Life 

In terms of her personal life, McGillis has been married twice. Her first marriage was to fellow Juilliard student Boyd Black in 1979, but they divorced in 1981.

1989, she married Fred Tillman, and they have two daughters together. However, McGillis and Tillman divorced in 2002.

In 2009, McGillis came out as a lesbian during an interview and later entered into a civil union with Melanie Leis, a Philadelphia sales executive.

Their union was dissolved the following year. McGillis has been open about her sexuality and advocated for the LGBTQ+ community.

Career

McGillis began her acting career in the early 1980s. Her breakout role came in 1985 when she portrayed Rachel Lapp in Witness. Her performance earned her Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations.

She gained further recognition for her role as flight instructor Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Blackwood in the 1986 film Top Gun, starring alongside Tom Cruise.

McGillis went on to star in various films, including Made in Heaven (1987), The House on Carroll Street (1988), and The Accused (1988), for which she received critical acclaim and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
