Actor Aaron Pierre was recently cast as John Stewart in the DC Uiverse’s Lanterns series. And now, Pierre, who recently shot to widespread popularity with Netflix’s Rebel Ridge, has addressed his casting as an iconic DC character.

Aaron Pierre is ‘honored’ to join DC’s Green Lantern series as John Stewart

Aaron Pierre took to Instagram to comment on landing the role of John Stewart in Lanterns. The series revolves around two human Green Lanterns, Stewart and Hal Jordan, trying to unravel a mystery on their home planet. Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) will star as Jordan opposite Pierre.

Sharing a screenshot of Deadline‘s report on his casting, Pierre wrote in the caption, “Tremendously honoured and abundantly grateful. A dream come true. Thank you all for the love and beautiful energy. Thank you for welcoming me to DC. Let’s work!” He also shared an image of the DCAU version of John Stewart, voiced by Phil LaMarr, as part of the post.

Since his outing as Terry Richmond in Rebel Ridge, Pierre has been a fan favorite to portray Stewart. He has also played Dev-Em in David S. Goyer’s Krypton, which aired for two seasons on Syfy from March 2018 to August 2019. He essayed the role of Malcolm X in the fourth season of National Geographic’s biographical anthology series, Genius: MLK/X.

On the big screen, he has appeared in Old (2021), Brother (2022), and Foe (2023). Pierre will also be voicing Mufasa in the upcoming musical drama Mufasa: The Lion King. He will also appear in the fourth season of Apple TV+’s The Morning Show.

Chris Mundy (Ozark) is the showrunner of Lanterns, which will come out on HBO. The series is slated to hold its production between January and June of 2025 in Atlanta. During a 2023 press meet, Peter Safran, the co-head of the DCU alongside James Gunn, said that Lanterns was “a huge HBO-quality event” similar to True Detective (via Variety).

Lanterns will have a total of eight episodes.
