A writer on the 2015 Fantastic Four movie has explained why Galactus was absent, despite a desire to make him the film’s “big bad.”
The Fantastic Four have had ups and downs when it comes to the silver screen. First there was Roger Corman’s low-budget 1993 adaptation that’s never seen the light of day, and likely only made to retain the rights.
Then there was a pair of Tim Story movies in the mid-2000s that featured classic Marvel characters like Doctor Doom and Silver Surfer, as well as a Galactus that was less planet-eating giant and more mystical cloud. Obviously, we’re getting Fantastic Four: First Steps next month.
In 2015, we got Josh Trank’s dark take on the material, which failed with critics and audiences alike, killing his iteration of the franchise stone-dead. In a new interview about that version, writer Jeremy Slater reveals how close fans came to seeing Galactus.
Galactus absent from 2015 Fantastic Four due to “internal pushback”
While speaking to ComicBook.com about the upcoming F4 movie, Jeremy Slater reveals that he’s been impressed by what he’s seen in the trailers, saying: “I like the fact that they are taking a big creative swing. They are telling a multiverse story, with a different world and a different set of heroes.
“It looks like they are bringing them in collision with our Marvel Cinematic Universe. I think that is a smart angle. I think they are getting Galactus right.”
Then in reference to Galactus nearly being in his own Fantastic Four movie – which was a 20th Century Fox production – Slater says: “I wanted to make him our big bad and there was some internal push back. First, he was our big bad. Then, he was just going to appear in one scene. Then, he was only appearing in the post-credits scene.
“Coming off the Galactus cloud from Rise of the Silver Surfer, which I was one of those fanboys probably bitching on Ain’t It Cool News back then about how he was a f-cking cloud, I was excited to bring back a classic Galactus and have that Jack Kirby design. It looked like they’ve accomplished that, so I can’t wait to see him in real life.”
