Zara has apologised after a children’s shirt sparked outrage for its ‘suggestive’ design. Parents usually don’t scrutinise the messages on their children’s clothing, but one video has changed that. TikTok user Laura Wilson, known as chaos.to.sanity, brought attention to the shirt, causing a stir among parents.

Wilson explained to a media outlet that she felt ‘physically sick’ and found the shirt ‘completely unnecessary and inappropriate’ after discovering it in a UK Zara store. In her video, Wilson said: “I’m not usually sensitive about clothing, but this was in the girls’ section at Zara.”

She urged viewers to see the back of the shirt. The front of the shirt reads, ‘The Strawberry: A small burst of sweet joy’ with the phrase ‘the perfect snack’ on one side. Wilson commented: “If you’ve bought this for your child, you need to reconsider. I’m shocked.”

Turning the shirt over, she revealed an image of a strawberry cut in half with the words ‘Take A Bite’ underneath. The shirt continued: “A burst of sweet delight. Making for the perfect summer snack,” in quotation marks. Wilson criticised further: “Is it just me, or is this inappropriate? I would never let my girls wear this T-shirt. This is wrong, isn’t it?”

She captioned her TikTok: “If you think this is wrong, please let me know. I’m disgusted – who is buying this for their child?” Social media users echoed her sentiments, expressing shock at the shirt’s implications. The company has issued an apology and removed the shirt from stores, according to reports.

“There was no intention for the term ‘snack’ to imply anything other than its traditional meaning, as shown by the strawberry image on the garment,” the company stated. “However, we understand some have interpreted it differently. Therefore, we’ve removed the T-shirt from stores and our website.”

Zara has been contacted for further comment.
