‘Your address was not presidential at all’- LSK slams Ruto over silence on deaths, injuries from Tuesday demos

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has slammed President William Ruto over his response to the aftermath of the Tuesday, June 25, 2024 demonstrations.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, LSK President Faith Odhiambo says President Ruto’s adminstration has failed to offer help to the Kenyans that were injured during the deadly protests.

Hospitals overwhelmed

LSK has stated that local hospitals are still overwhelmed by the number of injured persons with gunshot wounds, with many bodies lying in morgues in Nairobi and Nakuru.

“It is sad that 24 hours later, local hospitals are still overwhelmed by the number of injured persons with gunshot wounds. Bodies of young Kenyans lying in Nairobi and Nakuru morgues yet no one from the government has offered help or answers,” the LSK statement reads.

LSK faults Ruto

Ruto has also been faulted over his address to the nation on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, which LSK says lacked the consoling taste of remorse.

“Mr. President, your address to the nation last night was not presidential at all. You failed to wear the face the prayerful man of God who was elected in August 2022. Your words lacked the consoling taste of remorse from a father who has lost his family members,” LSK said.

In the statement, LSK further pointed out that President Ruto had ignored for weeks calls from the young people that have lost their lives, to hear their cry of pain and suffering.

“For weeks, these dead young people called on you to hear their cry of pain and suffering. Every day, they wrote to you offering suggestions and airing their sentiments via social media while some even came together, gathered in groups to present their views to the National Assembly’s Committee on Finance and Budget but all their cries fell on deaf ears,” the statement reads.

LSK faults Ruto MPs

LSK has also faulted Members of Parliament allied to Ruto, Cabinet Secretaries and Government Advisors for dismissing the Gen Z demonstrators as idle citizens.

“Then they came together on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 in peaceful demonstrations but your members of Parliament, Cabinet Secretaries and Advisors dismissed them as idle citizens holding ‘iPhones, driven to town in Uber only to eat chicken at KFC, without impact,” the lawyers said.

President Ruto on Tuesday evening addressed the nation where he pointed out that the deadly occurrences in the Anti-Finance Bill protests had been caused by an organised criminal entity.

Ruto issued a stern warning, stating that his government had mobilised all the resources to thwart any attempt of repeating such an attempt.

The demonstrators in their protest schedule had planned to storm State House on Thursday, June 27, 2024, to witness the President ascent to the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

Ruto has, however, declined to sign the Bill, and sent it back to the parliament for reconsidering.
