X suspends account of Alexei Navalny’s widow ‘for violating rules’ a day after she set it up and accused Putin of killing her husband

Elon Musk’s X Platform (formerly Twitter) has suspended the account of Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, it emerged today.

“Account suspended,” her account reads, with a note underneath: “X suspends accounts that violate the X Rules.”

It was not immediately clear what rules had been broken.

Her account on the Elon Musk-owned social media platform was set up on February 19 to share a video of her speaking to the camera.

In the video, she accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of killing her husband.

Alexei Navalny, 47, fell unconscious and died suddenly on Friday after walking through the ‘Polar Wolf’ penal colony above the Arctic Circle, where he was serving a three-decade prison sentence, the prison service said.

The West and Navalny’s supporters say Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death.

The Kremlin has denied involvement and said Western claims that Putin was responsible were unacceptable.

Within just 24 hours of creating the account, more than 90,000 people followed Navalnaya.

Before the account was suspended, X users were already reporting problems quoting or replying to Navalnaya’s tweets.

This is a breaking news story. More to follow…

For what reasons are X accounts suspended?

The guidelines on their website list the following reasons for account suspension:

Spam: Most of the accounts we suspend are suspended because they are spammy or just plain fake, and they pose security risks to X and anyone who uses X. These types of accounts violate our X Rules. Sometimes a real person’s account is accidentally suspended, and in those cases we work with the person to get the account suspended.

Account security at risk: If we suspect an account has been hacked or compromised, we may suspend the account until it can be secured and restored by the account owner to reduce potentially malicious activity caused by the hack.

Offensive messages or behavior: We may suspend an account if it has been reported to us as violating our X Rules on Abuse. When an account engages in abusive behavior, such as sending threats to others or impersonating other accounts, we may suspend the account temporarily or, in some cases, permanently.
